Still don’t think we’ll stay up with him in charge, based on what we’ve seen so far, but I find myself really wanting him to turn it around, not just because I love saints but for him personally. That’s probably because I feel sorry for him. The biggest moment in his managerial career and it’s started like this. Some woeful tactics and performances, but fans already against him, myself included. Anyone feel the same?
I kind of feel the same. The main reason I feel for him is that without a shadow of a doubt he is being judged partially on results/performances we had under Ralph. If we hired him in the summer and had lost our first 3 games (ignore cup & liverpool) of the season, there is no way he would have faced this level of pressure and abuse. We would all be patient and think, let's at least let the transfer window end so he has his own players to work with. But this is football, fans are fickle and have a notorious lack of patience. It is also partially the boards fault for not either acting earlier with Ralph or backing him properly in the summer with a striker.
I actually think he would. I made this thread purely based on the Forest game. It was one of the worst saints performances I can ever remember, in our biggest game of the season. The tactics were awful and the players looked like a rabble.
Not a chance would people be tipping him to be sacked next or fans chanting dont know what youre doing etc. Obviously we will never know but I am very confident he would be given more time and a bit of slack if fans weren't already so angry.
The last bit is a prime example of why clubs sometimes have to pay selling clubs what they're after (unless it's completely ridiculous, obviously). I'm not saying the Gakpo/Ramos moves would have gone through, as it seems they wanted a bigger club anyway, but not getting a striker in the summer could see us relegated and cost the club millions more than if we had put an extra couple of million on our offers (whether that be for Gakpo/Ramos or other players).
Jones has played a blinder tonight.Worth noting. Set up. Subs. System change. Excellent. More of that please. Let's hope people aren't wedded to change under any circumstance.
Well we know he’s capable. I wonder whether the players put in the extra effort; City, Sky, the big stage.
We've been known to put that sort of epic performance in every now and again admit all the ****. Chelsea at home earlier this season spring to mind. Let's hope he (and the team) can back it up Saturday, cos tonight means **** all in regards to PL survival.
Safe to say he definitely hasn't made us worse. We were outstanding tonight. Equalled Ralph's clean sheet tally for the season now too I believe? Though his came vs City rather than Bournemouth.
I certainly can't say that I gain confidence whenever he speaks to the press. But ultimately, if he engenders belief in the squad, and actually plays to win, he can begin every press conference by singing La Marseillaise while wearing knee-high galoshes and his favourite Spandex onesie, and I won't be too bothered.
We need more of those games tonight and if they happen and he keeps his mouth shut, the dissenters will disappear
Agreed, but needs a better track record of 0/12. When that becomes 12/24 which it needs to for us to survive, I Will shut the **** up up and he can sing " Onward Christian ****ing Soldiers or Saints and I will clap, but until then.lots of work to be done
Yeah I actually like fight and passion. If he can back it up with performances I will fall in love with him. Hopefully this week is a turning point
As an aside on this all, just speaking to my mate, who is sadly a Liverpool fan, but also the Manic Street Preachers biographer (and is Welsh). He's just caught up on the game and messaged me to say that he'd never heard Jones speak before, but that he has the exact same speaking voice as Richey Edwards.
