We’d try it and concede from the counter after it spooned into keepers arms or was closed down and ricocheted

They used to be illegal, when did that change?
The rule now says:-
<feinting to kick the ball once the kicker has completed the run-up (feinting in the run-up is permitted); the referee cautions the kicker.

The old wording said something like " the taker must complete the move without stopping or something similar" .

 

They’ve never been illegal as far as I know. You can’t stop and go back is the rule

 

And you can’t dummy over the ball any more, that used to be a rule but was changed
