Take your point Eire but if they’re not good enough for our bench then what Prem club would take them? Although the standard is lower, the football often more direct and the pace slower… I think playing competitive games in front of crowds against grown men is a useful education. It also is potentially a bit of a shop window… as with drameh last year. what is interesting is how many struggle for game time even at that level - which shows how far off PL level they are. Bate seems to be the one this year that’s beginning to stand out
… the wolves league cup game was sandwiched between important league games with little recovery time. We play Sunday Friday this week, so there’s less reason to worry about recovery… I expect a stronger side this time out, but he won’t risk anyone carrying a knock. League will have to take priority with our current position but a Cup run would be nice… apparently Angus kinnear thinks so too
And great to see Bate doing well but don’t forget that’s league 1 with a bottom half team. If he had anything like ability we hope he has he should be a stand out there surely
He will but it takes time to adapt to the physicality of men’s football after the tippy tappy of the U23s.
To be honest, the youth strategy should copy the way Brighton handled Ben White and Chelsea handled Connor Gallagher. Ben White went to Newport for a season in League 2 and then came to us in the Championship. He then had a season with Brighton before leaving for 50 million. Gallagher went to Charlton and Swansea in the Championship before joining West Brom and Palace in the PL. Now plays for Chelsea and England. This, to me, is the perfect route. We did that with Dramah last season but have missed a trick this season. We should have recognised his efforts for Cardiff, given him an improved contract and sent him back to Cardiff this season where we know he enjoyed himself. He'd have another 50 games under his belt, his value increased further and be happier for it.
No offence to any young upcoming player at our club but if we were to rely on Perkins or Fernandez being part of the main squad we are in big trouble I'm not saying they won't make it as Prem players but they are miles away at present. I've banged on about for a long time if your not getting in the squad get them out on loan you learn nowt at u21 level. If we believe certain players have the ability let them out on loan and learn the hard way. get them in proper competitive matches each week Infront of hostile crowds and pressure situations You learn alot from the lower leagues and if you're good enough your ability finds it way back to the Prem League. If Gelhardt was at many other Prem clubs he would be in the Championship kicking on getting 90 mins in his legs and seeing how good he really is. top and bottom of it all we can't let them go because we are shyte frightened to be left in the lurch with poor squad numbers. He's then left with a few minutes here and there what can the lad prove in that? the lad should be playing competitive matches now and doing 90 mins I honestly would rather see him playing 90 mins in League 1 than playing 5 mins off the bench for us it shows us where he's going and how he copes with 1-2 games a week. He's simply not trusted enough to start otherwise he would of played alot more minutes but we also are afraid to let him go out as our squad isn't big enough. I understand both sides but for the player it isn't good as he should of been playing fifty- hundred ninety min matches by now somewhere learning his trade.
That’s it. We’d find out fairly quick if he was gonna make it. If not then sell on. Pointless persisting with players for three or four seasons and only then finding out they’re not good enough like shacks Roberts maybe Gelhardt. We don’t know yet. Also would be better for the players as they could say get themselves a decent contract in championship instead of playing a few minutes here and there in our senior squad
Wonder if he'll go first team or with something like this. Robles Ayling...Llorente Wober....Firpo Adams....Greenwood.... Harrison.....Gnonto...Summerville .................Joffy
Spurs beat pompey today one nil and their scorer was harry kane. Rodrigo should start if it means a cup run. The fans deserve better than the cup sides Bielsa used to put out.
It's taken 3 seasons for Summerville to make the step up. Everyone could see the talent but patience was required to allow it to blossom.
FFS, this is supposed to be a match thread, not you lot dribbling on about general club stuff that's always well covered on Matt's daily breakfast debates. Where's the passion for the encounter? Where're your opinions about the extremely skillful opposition you're going to face tomorrow, or don't you really care? Is this going to be an easy one for you whoever Marsch fields? As Delia said - "come on, let's be 'aving you!"
I'm sorry mate. I forgot its a big game for you boys. It would mean the world to us to beat you tomorrow. Its the stuff dreams are made of. Real Roy of the Rovers stuff.
