So much this!! The Poch situation was completely different though as the team was playing pretty well for a promoted team and started to get some good results before Adkins was sacked. We had a core of players from League 1, now imagine Poch inherits a side that has been in free fall for a year. I'm not saying he wouldn't have got some points from these games but you're not exactly comparing apples with apples.
The only reason I changed my vote to Ralph out, was because he had given up on the one thing that made us competitive - the high press. I actually, tongue in cheek, asked on one thread if Ralph had stopped the press just to prove to the board that it was his style of play that made the players look good, better than they actually are, in order to get them to improve the quality of the squad. I have a scintilla of sympathy for Jones, inheriting such a poor quality squad, stuffed to the gunnels with “promising youngsters” but lacking in top quality experienced players, but he needs to either impose a style of play that the players can take on board, and stick with it, or he needs to replicate what made our average players look good, by returning to the press. Whatever happens, I find him to be the most uninspiring choice for a manager and can only wonder what the players, especially the internationals, are thinking when he is trying to get his points across. I think, when he first came to us, he was saying things about making the players happy and came across more like a substitute teacher, looking for approval and to be a student’s friend, rather than someone who was prepared to ruffle a few feathers in order to get the job done. Time to go Nathan.
Thank you, I find that approach most encouraging. There's at least two of us on this track, possibly more, hopefully. If the next two cup games and the AV game are repeats or worse then realistically speaking the situation with NJ will be changed, I'm sure. However, it is possible however that may seem, that we get even 2 decent performances out of three and results to match, then perhaps we'll move on from there with more optimism.
As was pointed out earlier this team is much the same as the one that beat Chelsea. What the **** happened to turn a silk purse into a pig's ear?
I'm not just talking about results, I'm talking about changing tactics and the way the team plays. Poch clearly managed to get his ideas across to his players in 5 days. They weren't the finished article but you could see the style of play, what he wanted and how it might work. Jones has had 8 weeks and I'm seeing none of that.
I remember Jack Cork joke-complaining that Poch was working the players like dogs, right from the start, with double training sessions and so on.
Another issue is that his coaching staff/adherants are even less experienced and have only worked with Jones as senior coaches. Sheehan only retiring in the summer, after a career in the lower divisions. Cohen had a brief spell as Forest u21 coach before hooking up with Jones.
Not sure if posted already, but enjoyed this from Adam Blackmore and the Havant manager, who is a Saints fan. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0dthpkz Laughed when he said Lyanco wouldn't get into his team Blackmore also said he's been asking for a year to have an interview with the owners and talk strategy etc. He seems unimpressed by the owners.
The last time I had a negative gut feeling about a manager was Pellegrino but even he had a method and plan. Jones just appears to be throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping some of it sticks even after an extended period working with the players during the WC break. There have been some uninspiring team selections and quite frankly bizarre in game management, i'm usually one to give a manager the benefit of the doubt but I saw absolutely nothing in the Forest game to give me any hopes that it will improve. I don't care if having 3 managers in a season usually results in relegation, SR have to act now before the rot really sets in.
I would normally agree with the argument presented by Saint Osprey as this is exactly the kind of response which normally sets Saints fans apart from others. We tend to be patient with new managers. However, I think there is a difference if someone is clearly out of their depth and that former professionals or people involved in the game are all making the same point. So far I have read or heard comments from the likes of Jo Tessum, Ian Wright, Hal Robson-Kanu, Paul Dodswell, Chris Sutton etc and they have all commented on the lack of identity, defined tactics and the failure to make use of the window during the World Cup. The failure to communicate what players are supposed to be doing was evident on Wednesday and this, for me, demonstrates a distinct lack of professionalism. I had no idea of the inexperience of Jones' coaches either which tends to reinforce the lack of experience and knowledge. I would accept Osprey's position if the comments were more subjective and the criticism was being made for a range of issues yet this criticism is consistent in what is being indentified as failings. The fact that this seems to be replicated by those supporters who have been at St Mary's to watch the match and, in many instances, as this board demonstrates,. are extremely knowledgeable. I have not read one comment in favour of Jones that has said anything beyond "give him a chance" or that "he has been dealt a poor hand." I would defy anyone to stick their neck out and comment that there is logic in the tactics Jones uses or his team selection. No one can explain why he will come good or where there are crumbs of comfort. If everyone is effectively saying the same thing, it is apparent that we can't all be wrong. The criticism is right across the board from former players, the press and the supporters. (I would include the Stoke supporters in this argument too. ) Furthermore, I believe that the Saints directors are not going to be stupid enough to realise that the plan is not working. The only question is not "if" but "when." I feel we will get hammered tomorrow and then suffer another reverse against City. If the post-match comments after such defeats are as ridiculous as the ones made by Jones on Wednesday, I cannot see how his position can remain tenable. He will be seen as talking nonsense and the football / results he will have delivered will destroy his credibility. If he is still in a job at St Marys by the end of January, I will be staggered. We will win nothing with him at the helm and the club will have been reduced to a sadistic version of "The Apprentice." He has to go.
More confident at defensive set pieces!? Didn't we just conceed twice to Fulham from pretty basic set piece deliveries?
About a week or so ago he said he'd managed to watch 8 of the 15 so far (I guess watching the World Cup was more important for him). So to now be at 12 games I guess is heading in the right direction... I wonder if he'll get to the end of the 15 whilst still in the job.
I'm sure watching football matches for a manager is nothing like smashing out Breaking Bad! He probably watches the match more than once, pausing it and make notes, rewinding etc. If he had said nothing about the matches there would be nothing to say about this but because he has volunteered some info that I do not recall any other manager mentioning, people are getting on his back about it! I get that we have lost every league game and that performances have gotten worse etc but it seems like things are being talked about just to add weight to the point that he is out of his depth and should **** off etc, him being Welsh, christian, saying "they" rather than we when referring to the time when he wasn't in charge and now the fact he hasn't watched every match!
