Hold on - has it gone from verifiable to "my hypothesis" already?

Actually, don't. I'm not actually all that interested.

Only the Chinese Buddhas. The Japanese and Thai ones are generally quite svelte.

There have been many studies done on the phenomenon actually, but you’re right I don’t really care enough to discuss, other than to say that questioning someone’s beliefs is bang out of order and a low blow.

I don’t think he’s the right man either but there’s no need for it

Google says Buddha was the legitimate son of a King, (Siddhartha Gautam), no mention of his girth, so it looks like you may have got it wrong again? Other Buddha's may be available...

I don't think he was quite questioning beliefs as much as whether using guidance from a proposed celestial voice is better than using rationality and logic. I think where Vin may be slightly wrong is the suggestion that it is only the 'celestial voice' that he uses, rather than turning to that perhaps in times of desperation.

Thank you for the source though, will read that. It's an interesting phenomenon.

Mate.. If someone had said “I am deeply concerned we have a Muslim in charge”’or “I am concerned we have a Jew in charge”, you would rightly say that’s prejudicial and offensive. There is no difference here.

Hold on, that study doesn't say what you were claiming it said. So, yeah, fake news on the correlation between improved performance and faith. It's just saying that Christian athletes felt they were better able to cope with the demands of elite sport by returning to their beliefs for help. Not that their performance was demonstrably better as a result - just that they had a celestial comfort blanket there.

It's nothing to do with the actual religion or belief. Just the supposed communication between the manager and the proposed higher power. The religion itself is irrelevant (over and above the weirdness of there potentially being more than one perceivable God, but that's an entirely different discussion).

I don't have a major issue with it. My wife is a Christian, and find comfort in her faith (in much the same way I'd imagine Jones does). But I'm not sure Vin is necessarily damning all faiths and beliefs in his comments that he'd prefer someone to use rationality over belief structures.

    Abstract:

"One underreported issue in the research on Christian athletes has been the difficulties these athletes experience in living with the demands and expectations of the dominant culture of elite, competitive sport. Data were derived from in-depth interviews with 31 elite athletes (23 males and 8 females), who were also professing Christians and associated with the evangelical organization, Athletes-in-Action. The athletes reported that it was by turning to or returning to an evangelical Christian faith that they were better able to cope with their problems and with the demands of the culture of elite, competitive sport. Discussion of these findings included a consideration of Coakley’s (1994) model “of conflict, doubt, and resolution,” which attempts to represent the conflicts experienced by Christian athletes in elite sport, and the approaches they take to assuage these conflicts."

Interesting choice of article to support the hypothesis...

You have the right to express your opinion and obvious fears, but I am sure if SR get the slightest whiff of doubt, they will take appropriate action within the legal niceties.

This is a perfect summary of how we played last night - I wish I could write something as succinct. The only thing I would add was that one reason it failed was the cynical and vicious fouling from NF in the wide areas. The ref let it go on far too long imo.
Regardless, as our only tactic it was illiterate: played to the strengths of the opposition and marginalized our classiest player by bypassing him completely.

The equivalent would have been if I'd said "I'm concerned we have a Christian in charge".

    I didn't. And I wouldn't.

That's now Villa and Forest this season who will never again play so badly in a match and yet walk away with three points and a clean sheet.

I wasn't even that downbeat at FT. I'd resigned myself to defeat from the moment Forest scored. So depressing.
