No-one on the bench to change things if needed.
    And it will be needed.

A GK, 6! defenders, Sarr and White.

Maybe Forster can play up front. All 2 meters of him.

Crowd cheers Spence onto the pitch implying they’re sick of Doherty and Emerson and want to see someone else given a shot….

    Doherty starts.

I really don't think that Doherty's the problem.
He's arguably our best wingback on both sides, sadly.
I'd prefer to see virtually anyone on the left instead of Perisic.
Not that he's a bad player, by any means, but he nullifies Son.

Without changing formation, there's not much choice

I didn’t realise people still actually believe this.

As for Doherty, he’s absolutely a problem, awful footballer. Plays like a raffle winner 99% of the time. Players like him amongst a few others truly baffle me as to how they’ve made it pro, played with and against better in Sunday League.

Because it's clearly true. They both want to occupy the same space.
Perisic pushes Son inside and into traffic and Kane's now playing further forward.
That leaves the Korean in a congested spot where he's ineffective.

It doesn't help Perisic, either. He wants to get crosses into the box.
Who's he supposed to be crossing to? Kane and... that's it, really.
Son's **** in the air, Gil's tiny and none of the midfield attack headers or get forward well.

It's not though, it's just some narrative people are building because Son's in awful form. He was dire for Korea and has been dire in most of the games he's started with Sessegnon behind him. He's been slow as **** too, someone even pointed out the other day that Young managed to outpace him, if he's losing his pace then we're in serious trouble.

Crosses into the box are still better than nothing at all, which is what Sessegnon provides when he plays, lost count the amount of times he's tried crossing only to smack the defender who's 5 yards away.

    Palace lining up 4,2,3,1

They will utterly totally control the middle of the park.
6 players charging at our defence, because our front 3 won't defend.
If we couldn't work our way past Villa, there is no way we are getting anything here.

Son's goals this season have all come when Perisic hasn't been on the pitch.
Stick the Croatian on the right-wing and leave Gil on the bench. He's a left winger and it shows.

Perisic's assists have all come from set-pieces, barring one cross to Richarlison against Marseille.
He can do that from any position.

Good case to say our whole XI don't particularly do that too well and yet we seem hell bent on sitting back most games.

A coach who has only one formation and is unable - or unwilling - to change it even when that formation isn't working is not a good coach!
But he could at least have started with Spence and Sarr in a similar set up to give them a chance. 5 or 10 minutes when trailing 0-2 ain't much of a chance ..
