l do get where you’re coming from. It looked like the summer signings were 50% marsch 50% orta. This is obviously another marsch one. Personally I think it de-risks a signing if the coach knows the player. But I also accept that you may be making a compromise on quality in order to be ‘safe’. I think with a January signing, where there’s no pre-season it’s an advantage to know the player. But I’ve never seen him play, no idea if he’s any good. Neither excited nor disappointed by the signing!
Can see the sprint training now... Firpo 1st = Llorente 1st = Cooper 1st = Koch 1st = Rasmus 1st = Struijk 1st = New Guy 7th It's ok though as he just needs a bit of time to settle in.
I agree he looks like he’s our left back signing. Then when firpo comes good biggrin he can challenge for a centre back position. He was very circumspect with regards to being asked about his preferred position and I suspect he was pre-briefed on the response. Hey… everyone has a favourite position surely!
I’m sure he’ll make up for his lack of straight line pace by having the turning circle of the torrey canyon.
To be honest milky and joking aside I'm just pleased we've strengthend the left side of defence. We now have Wober, Cooper, Struijk, Firpo as left footers with Dallas as maybe back up if needed. The right side has always been stronger so finally we've addressed that imbalance and hopefully everyone now gets to play on their preferred side.
Erik Ten Hag last night said a new player in January must be a good fit and hit the ground running plus must improve the team or pointless buying as you would have to wait too long for them to settle. Sure Bielsa said that countless times. So I understand why Marsch opted for Wober, lets hope he performs. Love the idea of players capable of playing in other positions. We had Dallas in various and he was pretty good at them all. Alioski LW, LWB, AM. Harrison had played as striker but James got the nod? Struijk DM cover last season and CB and now LB, but he should be developing his left CB role not learning LB. Koch played RB, DM and CB last season not great at any but doing better as a CB this season, Ayling RB and CB. Firpo can play RB but not needed and he can play CB also not needed, Klich is an 8 end of but used last season and this as a DM. Rodrigo 7, 8, 9, 10 but not really worked except as a 9 if he gets a pass. Sinisterra LW, RW and 10 yet to see him in full flow. The best football I have seen from Summerville was playing RW with Drameh as RB. Loads of goals and unplayable but Marsch plays him on the left and through the middle? Wonder if Marsch is brave enough to play Perkins just for the bantz, but he can play as a 9 or a 10 and all his goals for us is from 10
I hear you jamster... though i don't really rate either of our right-sided centre backs (though Llorente's contract extension is like a new signing - and, as we were told recently, koch is playing the best football of his career ) Time for Hjelde to go on loan? ... another left-footed CB who can play lb! He's a bit green for first team level but has something about him and still only 19
Just to let you guys know. Wober usually plays centre half or on the left of a back three. However, this season he has played at left back all season. Sounds a bit like a left sided Ayling. (The above information is from Google. I've never seen or heard of him before)
interestingly he said he’s happy as 6 too… what is it with these centre halves supposedly being ok as dms. Whenever we try struijk/Koch there, they look like statues. I hope they’re not thinking he can also do a job when Adams or roca is out.
Think they are priming Greenwood for that role. He's doing well too. Struijk and Kochs problem in midfield is that it takes them half an hour to change direction. I have no clue on Wober.
Firpo can play RB but not needed and he can play CB also not needed I had to smile at this line, he can’t master LB not alone RB or CB and as for not needed, he’s never off the treatment table so if we needed him in those positions it would be a dire situation
Yeh i think they’ve realised greenwood is a good all round footballer with no pace so are bringing him back to midfield - they tried Archie as a pivot pre-season too. Problem is the centre halves are, as you said, too cumbersome… and more forward thinking players like klich, and the youngsters like greenwood, gray don’t have the nous (yet) - gyabi I guess is the obvious successor but again barely out of nappies. Given we play with 2 pivots typically, I think the squad is light of a PL ready natural defensive midfielder.
