Is it the winter solstice (21/12) ...when for us the earth is tilted the furthest away from the sun and the darkest day.... from then on the light returns day by day....?
Given half of the answer away alas. But what occurs that differentiates our entirely arbitrary calendar from what is actually happening?

Seems to have died a death, so... On Wednesday the 4th January at 16:17pm we reach the Perihelion which is the nearest point of the Earth to the sun at 147,098,925km or 91,403,043miles after which time we start to get closer to the sun. Mildly elliptical orbit complete, we start.another journey around the sun. It varies due to gravity: next year our journey is about 9,500km longer. Over to anyone who fancies a go.
