CONNOR WICKHAM could be out of action for months after damaging knee ligaments in Sunderland’s 1-0 defeat at Manchester United. The £8m summer buy was stretchered off just two minutes into the match at Old Trafford after twisting his knee as he tried to charge down a clearance from Rio Ferdinand. And boss Steve Bruce confirmed that the initial signs are not good for the 18-year-old former Ipswich man. “It’s the big disappointment of the afternoon for us, because we think it is a serious knee injury,” he said. “We hope that when we get the scans it is not as serious as it first looks, but the signs are not very good. “It looks like a cruciate injury, but that is only the early diagnosis and we won’t know for sure until we get the scans back.” If Bruce’s worst fears are realised, Wickham will be the EIGHTH Cats player to have suffered knee ligament damage in 18 months. Bruce added: “I’ve never known anything like it. “We’ve had seven in the last 12 months – David Meyler and Fraizer Campbell have had two injuries apiece, Michael Turner, Titus Bramble and Craig Gordon. “And now Connor could make it eight in 18 months.
