Good Morning. It's Tuesday 27th December, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road Does Llorente's contract extension show a lack of ambition Leeds fans on social media have been left gob smacked, after it was revealed that Diego Llorente has been awarded a new three and a half year contract extension, tying him down until the Summer of 2026. The 29yo has been in inconsistent form since his arrival at Elland Road during the 2020 Summer transfer window, and fans are concerned about the statement Leeds are making by keeping the Spaniard on their books for the next four or so years. The Whites have one of the leakiest defences in the top flight, and Llorente can take responsibility for his fair share of these. Whilst a useful back-up player, many consider the Spaniard a liability and are starting to question the clubs' ambition. please log in to view this image Leeds can't afford to leave business to the last minute It's hard to contemplate, but Leeds have not signed a first team player during a January transfer window since their 2019/20 Championship winning campaign, and even then it didn't end well. Whilst Leeds may have got their fingers burnt over the Jean Kevin Augustin debacle, they have nobody else to blame apart from themselves. They left their transfer business to the very last minute, then didn't have time to do their homework properly. Their actions were nothing short of gross negligence, but have they learnt by their mistakes. During the final day of the last Summer's transfer window, the ER hierarchy Commandeered two private planes, and had a third on standby, on transfer deadline day last Summer in an audacious bid to land Cody Gokpo. Obviously, this went pear shaped, and we ended up with Wilfred Gnonto. Although the Italian International turned out to be a shrewd signing, last minute preparations probably played a major part in us losing out on Gokpo. please log in to view this image Could Cunha be one of the shrewdest signings of the season Say what you like about Cunha, but he had many admirers, but Wolves struck first. The feel good factor of signing a player of his quality may have given Wolves the lift they needed to propel themselves within a point of safety (by beating Everton at Goodison Park yesterday). £44m is a lot of money, but if he helps them stay up, it may have been one of the shrewdest signings of the season. please log in to view this image
Morning all Cunha we shall see, I wasn’t impressed with his goal scoring stats, I’m not bothered if we truly missed out on this one Llorente we need better but a new contract doesn’t mean we can’t still sell him If we have any targets the sooner we get them in the better. We have Villa on the 13th and Brentford on the 22nd important games where a new signing or two could be worth 6 points if we have them in nice and early compared to deadline week
£50m for Cunha demonstrates a top new coach backed by a desperate Chinese owner, in fact the only Chinese owner in Europe investing in their clubs. Apparently there will be another couple of signings coming in too. On Yesterdays performance I can see Wolves escaping and finishing mid-way. We have to hope that Forest, Southampton and Everton have nightmare New Years
Pretty disgusted at Llorente getting a contract extension. I would have sold him this summer. He has Cooper, Koch, Struijk all ahead of him imo and Cresswell will come in to the first team squad next season too. We also have Hjelde coming through. It's a joke that the weakest link gets a new contract. Dumb. January is a tough month. You have to go big (Liverpool with Gakpo) or you have to gamble (Wolves with a huge fee for underperforming Cunha). Personally I'd like to see a left back come in, that shouldn't be too difficult an improvement as we don't have one at the club. Even a loan option would do me. I'd also like a striker but getting one ready to go will cost alot in this window so I can't see that happening.
Cunha is a 50 million gamble and you know it @Doc. He's been **** in Spain which is a lesser league than here. He might be good but I think he will probably struggle. If we spent 50 million on him I'd be angry. It could be the end of Wolves for a decade or two if it all goes south.
Aaron Dagger has left the club The Whites confirmed the news on Monday 26 December, with the first-team performance analyst leaving Thorp Arch behind for the joys of League One football to join Jackson
Lots of different figs being bandied around for cunha - atletico paid 25m a year ago, and he hasn’t done great for them. They must be p*ssing themselves at turning a profit from a desperate Prem team. it looks a jka type deal though… loan.. becoming permanent in the summer subject to a few criteria (one of which is likely wolves staying up) for that to work for both parties there must be a sizeable loan fee. The ‘rising to’ figures I’ve seen are 35-40m. I don’t believe we would ever be interested at those numbers.. though I’m sure we were interested in taking a guy whose face didn’t fit on the cheap. He’s not and never has been a regular goal scorer.. but the consensus is he’s a very good all round footballer and very versatile as 9, false 9, 10… or either side of front 3. I think he would have been a good addition for us squad wise but out and out goal scorer? Given wolves problems up front is he the solution they need? Guess we’ll find out.
Don’t disagree mate a huge gamble. But as you say January madness which we don’t normally get involved in, but last throw of the dice for some clubs. Forest are spending big on another 2 or 3 too. We must do it this time and here’s an outside bet for you. Alfonso Pedraza remember him, we paid £300k loan fee with a must buy at £8.5m if Monk got us promoted. Obviously he went back home, but still only 26yo and valued at £15m as a flying LWB. Was a winger but now a very very good defender too
wolves have had no luck in front of goal this year, they don’t create enough for the football they play and they don’t take enough of what they do create… yesterday they did take them. Maybe it’s the psychological effect of a new manager. Sometimes it’s just pure lap of the gods. Don’t know that the performance was a new beginning but the result might kick start them.
Saw the pedraza links doc… always thought he jacked a bit of pace when he came to us, not sure how that would work for us now he’s converted to full back but hey who knows… we’re going to get linked with loads of left backs until we friggin sign one.
It does marvel me how some teams can take a player, they become a flop and they still manage to get more money for them. We'd be laughing if we could get more that we paid for Dan James he must be worth a third of what we paid and Firpo is another. We all know we need a few better players and knowing the funds are going to be limited I guess that is where the unrest in offering Llorente a new contract has come from
Hoping the Llorente contract is just a way of holding his value so that we get some cash back when we sell him back to La Liga The Kai Wagner link seems to be the strongest and been mentioned more than any other. A few journos are quoting club sources confirming he is a player they like
If Ihad some cash to gamble on a new LB I would say Wagner will be it. MLS season finished, best LB in MLS as has been selected last season and this into the team all star team of the season. But the biggy is he is only £4m…
He worked very closely with Jackson with the U23's. He stepped up when Marsch promoted Jackson to first team duties.
Cunha is not that much of a gamble. His fee is €50m (£44m) and strikers always sell for a premium. He is young (23) and a Brazilian International. There were loads of clubs after him, Wolves just got in there first. I reckon Wolves have a clause that Cunha only becomes permanent if they stay up. No way would he play in the Championship. Whats the better sell on prospect? Rodrigo for £27m or Cunha for £44m
Didn’t he sign for Athletico for £30m they consider him a flop and make £14m profit, that’s my point. Loads of clubs in for him and he decides to go to relegation threatened Wolves, I just don’t believe loads were myself
