Sunderland travel to Wigan in the Championship in their last game of 2022 Last time out Sunderland beat Blackburn and Wigan lost at Middlesbrough. Aji Alese will not make the trip to the DW, whilst Danny Batth and Lynden Gooch have been labelled as ‘touch-and-go’ by the Head Coach. Dennis Cirkin awaits a scan result following his withdrawal in Monday’s win on Wearside. Wigan are 2nd bottom after losing 4-1 at Middlesbrough. Nathan Broadhead, Max Power and James McClean are all expected to feature in the Wigan squad. Charlie Wyke has missed the last few games due to an injury. Defeat means new Latics boss Kolo Toure is still without a win in three games, leaving the visitors anchored in the relegation zone after eight defeats from their past 11. Kolo Toure currently has just two fit senior centre backs at his disposal in Rarmani Edmonds-Green and Curtis Tilt. Jack Whatmough limped off in the first half of Wigan’s 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United with a hamstring problem and is doubtful. Tony Mowbray: "Ultimately, I think we deserved the victory against a very good side. "We were fairly dominant in the first half but conceded from a set piece - they have four six-foot-three players in there and it's always difficult. "Someone told me that they hadn't lost a game this season where they had conceded first, and so that tells you it is a great effort from us to get the winner." Kolo Touré: "We are assessing Jack at the moment. As everyone could see, he felt his hamstring on Monday night. They are working on him right now and we are trying to make sure he is out there with us as quickly as possible." “Charlie Wyke is doing really well, I saw him yesterday, he has started running again, and it was very nice to see that. As you know, with injured players, it's very difficult to give any sort of accurate time frame.” Match Appointments: Referee: MICHAEL SALISBURY Assistant Referees: Matthew Wilkes and Mark Stevens Fourth Official: Stephen Martin Team Lineups: Sunderland AFC: (4-4-2) Patterson, Wright, Ballard, O’Nien, Hume, Neil, Evans, Roberts, Clarke, Omad, Stewart. Cheers for that RTB, great result yesterday and I think we can really build some momentum in the next couple of games. I am going for 0-2 for the lads, Haway Haway Haway
Ditto.....hope we've got enough legs left after yesterday. If so we should have enough to see these off, our nippy players should have a big day on Thursday eg Omad, Clarke and Roberts. HTL.
We're going to see some players rested in 1 of the next 2 games. I wouldn't be shocked if Simms starts this one in place of either Stewart or Amad. Hume has a chance to earn a place in the first XI with our current injuries as well.
Fancy us strongly against these. We have a good away record and on the back of yesterday I think we should be fine. Hume and Huggins will come in if he keeps the same shape but I reckon he might go 3 at the back. I really hope Wigan try to play out from the back because they are ****ing ****e at it. First away day this season for me. HTL
“Charlie Wyke is doing really well, I saw him yesterday, he has started running again, and it was very nice to see that." Something that most Sunderland supporters never witnessed
RTB Well we will meet some former players... some of whom I have no regrets about. Others not so much. As for the team, personally I would play both Simms and Stewart, in a 4 4 2 formation. We now have scored from a free kick, now we just need to score from a corner. Wigan will fight hard, particularly with the old boys. Another win please... and I may jump off the pier.
I dont think it will be easy there, and there will be lads up for it who seem to revel in playing us, we know who they are. That said we just look a side that is on the up, fighting for everything, and with some players in very good form. I wonder if the gaffer will mix it up a bit. Maybe Evans will need a breather? Chance Ba or Michut maybe? Neil seems to be maturing enough to maybe be the elder statesman in a 2 with one of those. Assuming Matete is going out on loan of course, otherwise chance for him. Ross looked shattered at the end, cant see him being pushed for another 90. Amad Roberts and Clarke pick themselves. I think Neil, ONien and Ballard do as well. Hoping Gooch is fit, Cirkin looked a bit more serious to me. Think I am going for hospitality with a couple of good Wigan pals who do some sponsorship up there. Goof lads they are so hopefully a good day out. Great thread again RTB. These are a treat.
Aye. Looks like him, Baath, Cirkin and Gooch out for the next 2 games. Huggins must get back into squad if fit. Hume and Onien only other options at full back. Could always play wing backs and a back 3 which can utilise Clarke as one of the wing backs, which I think he will do if not resting stewart it could be 352. Really good timing that Ballard is fit again.
O bloody hell... Random lad, 2nd phase, you could be right... need Ref Watch or something similar. We should also have a no prize for who guesses at what number corner we score from.. 110?
Well done RTB, . If Tony can marshal the squad and stay awake for the full 90 mins we should be fine , Wigan will be trying to prove a point as usual. but play as we can and its all 3 for us. OaU.
I'm not counting Simms' goal as a set piece goal. It took about 5 different touches from O9's kick to Simms' goal
Think we might see 3-5-2/3-4-1-2 give our issues at FB and the desire to play 2 strikers Patterson Ballard Wright O'Nien Hume Evans Neil Clarke Diallo Simms Stewart
TBH mate, I'm not really sure when we could last say that so confidently ... ... of course all the games are tough, things don't always click and players have bad games. But I always feel we can win and surprised if we don't.
Once again @RTB - thank you for these threads, we are all very privileged. I think TM will try and rest some and interject some youth (Ba, Matete, or Michut). If we are comfortable at half time then a flood of subs will find their way on I still think it will be difficult as a game though, but will go for 2-0 to the lads Hawaaaaaaaaay
