Just because say it’s good to get together with the family at Xmas doesn’t mean it never happens any other time of the year?

Not everyone can see their family every day, just not possible. I love 2 hours away from the rest of my family, be a bit much to pop round to see them for a big family dinner every single day. Might as well just pool all our money together and go buy a massive 8 bedroom mansion in that case!

Don't see any of my family (non-immediate members) at Christmas. All do it own thing with our own extended families.

Oh no the effort of driving for 2 whole hours, how can you possibly cope.

It's a good job that once a year give you an excuse to travel half the world away to see your folks.

    I'm being facetious.

But I'd hope my meaning would be clear. V

Well would be 4 hours of driving, 2 there and 2 back. Are we also meant to see the gf’s family as well as they’re 1 hour in the other direction.

So reckon if I finish work at 5. Drive home and get back at 6. Pick up the gf, then coukd get to my dads for about 8. Stay for what an hour or two having dinner? Leave there say 10, 2 hour drive to gf’s family for dessert so that’s midnight. Stay there for an hour or so and then head home reckon get back for about 1:30am to be up again in 5 hour for work.

400odd miles each day, which is about a tank of petrol. So that’s £500 a week plus for knows how much carbon footprint.

And that’s just seeing my dad, haven’t even taken into consideration seeing my brother, nieces and nephews, grandparents.. do I have to fit them all in every day as well or can we spread them out a bit?

Btw ‘either every day is special or non at all’ makes no sense as the very definition of special is something that is better than the usual. If every day is special, then by definition no day is special.

So yes, in an ideal world we’d all see our loved ones every single day but that’s no feasible. And just because many get together at Christmas and looking forward to that special day, doesn’t mean the vast majority don’t get together at other times of the year as well (birthdays, anniversaries, random weekends when there is no ‘special’ occasion).

It is hard to maintain all year. But that's why it matters that you try. Trying because you want to, rather than because you should means more.

I didnt expect my post to cause an argument. I thought most people would just think I was a grinch and move on.

My basic sentiment is try your best everyday, sometimes it's hard, sometimes it's not possible, but try anyway. If you can try on the 25th you can try on the 24th,on the 23rd, on the 22nd etc.

I'm not exactly a paragon of virtue, I'm well aware that I'm not the best person. But I try to be better than I am.

Too many parents put emotional pressure on their grown up kids when it comes to Xmas. They forget they have a life of their own and probably kids of their own who they want to spend time with .Happened to me until it came to a head and I just flatly refused to be involved with Xmas.

It's not just about effort... I think I would quickly grow to resent my family if I see them every day. <laugh>. Small doses at a time is great though.

    zelensky has balls of steel.

turned up in Bakmut for fun and photos. Its pretty clear the russians have run out of steam in their push there as a result.

by contrasts putin has more security than hitler ever had.

testing is a waste of time really. its just expense for no reason unless someone requires a shot of a test kit to sign off on sick note.

In 2020 we amazing survived the worst wave with no masks and no test kits by doing exactly what you are doing. Just stay away.

I got it last week "probably" the missus got it first and did a test and i said yeah thats a line now don't bloody bother doing any more of those.

its a few days stay away and be thoughtful and mind yerself.

Ironically we get COVID tests for free here.

We just had COVID-like illness pass through household again like last year this time. Like last year it started with my youngest who most likely picked it up from one of her castmates from the play she performed downtown at the theatre.

Last Xmas everyone tested positive but somehow I avoided getting sick (despite being resigned to get it when my wife got it... Slept in same bed, took no precautions to avoid it, just isolated from society at large).

Again this Xmas everyone got sick except me despite taking no precautions .

I am increasingly confident that I have that gene that 20% of people supposedly have that makes them stay asymptomatic.

After being in bulk for a week went to docs and saw a locum was diagnosed with diverticula disease.Been back to docs after a fortnight saw main doc and he thinks it's chronic constipation but wouldn't criticise the locum. After him pressing all over my belly ( think ihe was trying to massage the stuck ****) and finger up the hoop ( all clear) and laxative powders now feeling nearly back to normal.
I'm determined to have a good birthday this time around.:emoticon-0172-mooni<laugh>
