THIS is fcking incredible for what it means for advancement in medical treatment.

A heart surgeon says he "probably saved the life" of a baby by carrying out a "world-first" operation using stem cells from placentas.

Professor Massimo Caputo from the Bristol Heart Institute used pioneering stem cell injections to correct baby Finley's heart defect.

He hopes to develop the technology so children born with congenital cardiac disease won't need as many operations.

Finley, now two, is "a happy growing little boy".

Stem cell research is part of the big focus on genetic advances in biomedical sciences. It has so much potential.

I don't know if it's still the case but religious fundamentalists in America stopped any research involving stem cells... something to do with playing god or some bollox like that.

    Yes.

I don't believe stem cell research is playing god though.

Ah right, I just got thinking after your Jesus myth comment earlier, maybe you didn't believe, just wondered that was all mate.

It was more the 'baby Jesus' and Christmas thing tbh which I think is a myth.

And because I was being facetious <laugh>

    I did wonder lol...

I'd have been told by my mum it was blasphemy to say something like that decades ago - hence why I'm always careful not to insult people's beliefs - bit like that guy in France I think it was who drew a picture of a religious person and paid with his life, so stark reminder I suppose to be respectful at all times...

Anyway, the bit about religious beliefs and research was what mainly caught my attention - I use to be like that and think it was intefering with nature, hence why I took an interest in dolly the sheep, because in a sense it reminded me of my past thoughts about whether it was playing god.

I've got old now and generally have allowed those thoughts to be cast to the wind, but I would ocassionally remind myself where are we going with all this, and whatever I believe in, when does it cross the line.

Interesting that's all mate, no judgements made. <ok>

That's bit is a rare quality these days tbh mate. I was brought up like that also.

On the other points, Dolly the sheep is an interesting one. I have my own thresholds. What purpose did creating Dolly the sheep serve? Not much from what I recall. So I'm not so sure we should be doing that. Then there's the other extreme where Jehovah's Witnesses won't give blood (I think that's correct) and I don't agree with that either.

Then there's the grey stuff - some ppl believe that you shouldn't donate organs as it's written somewhere that God wants you to return your body in the same form as he gave it to you (apart from things beyond your control e.g. having your hand chopped off by a combine harvester). But I don't believe that God was referring to organ donating which serves to save lives. As with all things, I think God was looking at intent - are you fcking around with your body for vanity sake, for example?

Then there's stuff which I think is complete fundamentalist bollox - like stem cell research.

I find the balance between science and faith very interesting. Largely bcos I have to walk that line often and make my own judgements.

Merely to answer the question, Dolly the sheep went on to help research into Parkinsons and Alzhiemers, some scientist made some connection between creating Dolly the sheep and those diseases, I only know that because I saw some documentary on a Japanese channel that was in English. The trial was actually succesful for Parkinsons, and they had video footage proving it, where a man went from complete tremors, to calm. However, it was shortlived, because whatever it was that attacked the cells, also attacked the new cells, so the cure was incomplete in trial. The guy that created dolly the sheep caught Parkinsons, so that was also a connection to the trials.

    <ok>

That sounds worthwhile. My only questions are, was that their intention when they created her? And could the same have been done without creating her, i.e. done at a more cellular level?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking it, just weary about cloning a living being as a luxury.

I don't know Trebs, but I've just remembered who the other scientist was that was researching Parkinson's it was Dr Tilo Kunath.

Dr Tilo Kunath is shown in this video...

Really good video that. Stem cell research and Edinburgh <ok>

I see the bit about Dolly and the bloke who got Parkinson's. What I liked was Kunath creates all these stem cells specific for Parkinson's research, then sends them to other research institutes all over the world and basically says "you don't have the ability to create this, so here you go, go do the research that you want, take it in the direction you want to find a breakthrough". I love that because it creates unlimited potential for success.

I was watching some programme on 'Blaze' didn't even know the channel existed but it must be some sci-fi day for them. One of the programmes was about Hindusim and Buddism and its links to sounds and patterns.

It got into the scientific side of things where some guy, can't remember his name, proved that sounds make patterns, the more intense the sound the more complex the pattern. Much as the discovery of rhythm and acoustic and its effects on our brain.

It was looking at ancient history, regarding acoustics, I think they were alluding to it's connection to the planetary system, which on Earth would have linked to ancient religion - 'the other world.'

Quote: By chanting OM we are symbolically and physically tuning in to that sound and acknowledging our connection to all other living beings, nature and the universe. Some dodgy link I found... http://www.allcreation.org/home/om

Anyone else think this pic looks like it's taken by a spacecraft that's landed on a very small planet?

Last probable picture from the Mars Insight lander just released.
Maybe i am missing something about the horizon and curvature of the planet being a bit more visible than anywhere you might stand on Earth
