What a final… neither team knew how to defend Mbappe World Cup final hat trick. Still might not win it
Extra time was fantastic. Done very good chance, greater saves and end-to-end at times too... Penalties!!!
Well it settles the Messi v Ronaldo debate... I mean only 1 has a world cup to their name. GOAT...mmmmm, Greatest of his time perhaps. Joins Pele and Maradonna Argentina will be **** at the next world cup though.
Side note to the final. Varane is crap. Not sure why he's rated so highly, he's been poor all WC and there's a reason Real Madrid were ok will selling him to ManU.
Fifa give the young player and goal keeper awards to Argentina Just because you win the trophy doesn't mean you were the best in that position. Croatian GK should have won the Golden Glove.
Success like that is bound to enhance Gareth's reputation no end. Another couple of years on his contract at least.
To be fair, there was never a debate to be had between CR7 and Messi. It was only the fan boys that were piping up about CR7 but it was clear that Messi was always the better footballer. CR7 will go down as an all time great - one the best the sport has ever seen. But as time went on, his game became very one dimensional and ended up just being a great goal scorer, at the detriment of the rest of the team. Messi has been a goal scorer, creator and play maker.
Agree I think Messi has always been the better footballer. Thing is, Ronaldo is called an absolute goal machine. Been classed as the greatest goal scorer of all time which you could def make an arguement for. But.. Ronaldo 819 goals in 1145 appearances (0.71 goals a game) Messi 793 goals in 1003 appearances (0.79 goals a game). So even on pure goals, messi out does Ronaldo. Then you add in Messis 350 assists compared to 234 from Ronaldo. Messis 3 red cards compared to Ronaldos 11. And I think most people would say that Messi’s general play is more exciting to watch, especially in the last 5/6 years where Ronaldo has gone from being an exciting winger who scored to just a poacher in the box. The only thing going in Ronaldos favour would be he’s done it for different teams in England Spain and Italy. Overall I think in every aspect messi outdoes Ronaldo. He’s an absolute monster of a player and one of the greatest ever.. but messi is just the better all round player.
As I said once on another thread... I think the difference between Messi and Ronaldo is Messi is about doing the best possible and Ronaldo is about trying to look the best possible. How many dozens of times have we seen Ronaldo dispossessed, or failing to move forward or make a pass when doing his silly step overs? Messi can do some pretty fancy moves too... But it's about getting the result, not looking pretty.
I think most people would agree that Messi is definitely the better of the two. He's a team player who still manages to outshine everyone else as an individual. Thing is, there's no disgrace in coming second to the most phenomenal talent of a generation - far from it, to be second best in the world at anything is an incredible achievement - but Ronaldo's ego probably won't let him accept that. Still, it's that ego that has spurred him on to become the player he has been, without the spectre of Messi looming over him he might not have been quite the same player.
What I don't like, is how many articles I've seen describing the game as a showdown between Messi and Mbappe. No doubt, they are the stars of their respective teams, but it's so disrespectful for all the other members of the teams. One man alone doesn't win a world cup. If one man alone could win a world cup, Derek Asamoah would have led Ghana to five by now. Seriously though.. pretty disrespectful how many articles have boiled this down to a 1v1 encounter.
