Guthrie - Cover for Cabaye and Tiote?

  1. I know Guthrie isn't the powerful figure we have in Tiote, but what Guthrie does do well is hold the ball. He's a very sharp player, good reactions and great agility and he makes great runs up the center of the pitch. If we need someone to fill that holding mid role when Tiote is absent, Guthrie is the man, and the same when Cabaye is injured. He's also a good creative player. He passes well and can put a ball into the box. He's also got a good shot on him as well.

He's not as good as Cabaye or Tiote at doing their jobs, but he could cover both IMO.

Great player. I've always had faith in his ability, just not in his fitness. He really frustrates me because he has the potential to be a fantastic player at this level but he gets injured too often. Lets hope he maintains this form and puts pressure on Tiote and Cabaye for their place.

Great as cover, although a better CM wouldn't go amiss as cover ahead of him. Ceratinly deserves/needs a new contract imo.

I agree mate he's under rated, gets slated a lot (i was one to do the slating) but when he gets a chance he plays well .. deffinetely our best back up CM.

He'd be a great cover, as proven in the last couple of games, but problem is, will he accept being a cover?

He could go to a Swansea kind of team and shine and play first team football?

Very good cover, give him a contract and have him poised to go first team whenever either Tiote or Cabaye get injured; he's shown he can play both the Tiote role and Cabaye role very well.

They virtually have identical games. Break play up, pass then move. Tiote sits a little deeper than the other two, and Guthrie occasionally pings it long while the others keep it on the floor, but fundamentally their games are pretty similar. I'd always seen Guthrie as more of a box-to-box type, no doubt Pardew has made him make subtle changes to his game to cover the other two, and he's a much better player for it in my opinion.

He showed a good box-to-box display today judging by some of the comments here( I didn't watch the match so can't judge ). He isn't really a natural defensive midfielder to be honest but he's got a great passing range(similar to Cabaye's), good vision, decent tackler and can score a few. He isn't a great attacking CM but a good box-to-box player.

''Guthrie signed for Newcastle on 11 July 2008 for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £2.5m, on a four year contract. His new manager, Kevin Keegan, compared him to former Newcastle favourites Rob Lee and Paul Bracewell''. This sums him up IMO.

I will admit I was very critical of Guthrie last season. I just kept remembering him losing the ball at WBA away last year that cost us the game. But the last 2 games he's been outstanding. So much so that I would consider starting him in a midfield 3 with Tiote and Cabaye against City.

Second half he played on the centre on his own virtually and did very well, sign him on a new deal Pardew! You know it makes sense.

Give him a new deal, but make it clear to him that he will mainly be back up. Then he can decide whether or not he wants to be backup or a starter in a smaller team

I wouldn't word it as back up, more borderline first 11.

He got a lot of grief when he was played out on the right , which he wasn't too good at as he tended to drift inside a lot not offering a lot of width..

Whenever he's played in CM he's done well

Always thought that was odd, as he was doing exactly what Barton did.

Defo a CM not a winger.

excellent squad player, he lacks pace though.

The real question is whether we can keep ahold of him, he's not going to get ahead of a fully fit Cabaye/Tiote and he'd shine in a lower PL team. He could refuse to sign another contract and get a real payday at another club, hopefully we'll continue to head in the right direction and he'll want to be a part of that.

  16. Guthrie doesn't really lack pace, for a center mid. Sprint speed he's average, but Cabaye isn't really a faster sprint either. Heck Tiote isn't really a fast sprint. But all our CM's have good movement and good agility. They can pass and move the ball effective.

    This.

I think he's a very good 3rd choice CM to have and hopefully he sees the potential the club currently has and will want to be a part of that. He'll also get his chances to start on a regular basis if Tiote/Cabaye lose form/get injured and when Tiote goes to the Arfrican Nations' I'm confident Guthrie will do a fine job. <ok>

Let's hope he gets a new contract first of all.

fair enough, maybe its a bit to do with his positioning/awareness, but Guthrie seems to be a split second too slow to get to a position you'd see them occupy comfortably

(edit: i think he's a good player mind, thats my only criticism of him)

Now now now, I don't post near enough to be able to make any claims with you fanatical forumflaming lot, but all I can remember is that Sanchino and I were the only ones on here who would consistently back Guthrie and call for him to come back into the starting 11

Now look at you all. You fickle Northern monkeys can't get off Danny Guthrie's dick after a few decent performances

lol jk i'm just glad he didn't single-handedly lose us the game this time and make me eat humble pie

After the past few performances Guthrie has proven that he can be trusted when he's called upon. Over the course of a long season, our starters are always going to miss games. That's where players like Guthrie take their chances and make the manager have a selection headache when the starter comes back. That's what Guthrie is doing now , he is daring AP not to pick him..

    Well done Danny!
