My mum and dad had an off licence so the old man would treat himself whilst at the wholesaler and kept some quality reds in the cellar such as Nuit Saint Georges and Chateau Neuf which he'd bring out at Christmas - not to have with the dinner itself, but to sup into the evenings - we'd drink a nice white with the Christmas Dinner but my earliest (very happy) memories are that us kids would be allowed half a glass of Asti Spumante with the Christmas Dinner, the amount in the glass increasing each year as we got older
My parents were very strict with alcohol and I wasn't allowed it under any circumstances, my grandad was an alcoholic so that probably explains their adversity to it. First time I had some at Christmas was with the now in laws and it was a neuf de pape and that's what probably started me enjoying wine. The French have become lazy though and you can pay a lot of money for crap neuf de pape now Saint Emillion is the same.
Got a tree from Tescos yesterday for a princely price of a £5 and although small* isn't bad tbf * I actually only wanted a smallish one anyway
