From this outsiders perspective, the English FA should be fighting tooth and nail to keep Southgate in post. The job of a national team manager is one of the toughest gigs in football. When things aren't quite right, he can't go to his chairman and ask for funds to buy in success.
From where I stand, Southgate has developed an ethic and style that makes England competitive against any opposition. The players play for him as well as the badge and at the end of the day, it's been individual errors by players that have cost England desired silverware.
Stick with him, show him some love and support and his and his country's day will come

Managers results depend imo mostly on players ability. England have an abundance of talent and yet for example the French with less talent prevailed. He should be rid of just for the way he sent the team out 1st half against the French.

Based on what, spending over £200m at Newcastle to do well? Different at International level where you can’t buy what you need. Howe is too inexperienced at the moment.
It’s hard to be too critical of him as he has taken us a long way, but I do see your points as valid. Too often he hasn’t had the attacking options front of mind for me, or doesn’t know how to implement them. Looking at the attacking talent on the bench when we needed to chase the game, yet he keeps Declan ‘square or back pass’ Rice on. Why not bring on attack minded players like TAA or Maddison to worry the French. My worry if we stick with him is, he won’t change that thought process, so we will probably never progress.
As a person a real gent, solid, trustworthy, honest, reliable, reserved and careful, his football teams play just like his character, unfortunately he is not a winner but he is nice and safe, I don't think he is very exciting, intelligent but not very smart, time for him to move on and find another deck chair.

Howe would be a breath of fresh air. Southgate for me got his subs wrong and is far too cautious.

amazing how peoples views vary on a similar subject and the comparisons they make. I guess thats why we have such an inter active board. If we all agreed GS was a manager that should carry on for another 2 years and then make a decision 2 years before NEXT world cup to stay it would be a very boring thread!

I know it is just a single call but for me Southgate should have insisted that Kane not take the second penalty which makes me question his entire set-up and substitution policies. Kane absolutely smashed the first one past his team-mate at Spurs but asking him to be put under even more pressure, in a situation that could have taken us further in the World Cup, was totally wrong. Southgate should have gone with a player that wasn't well known to Lloris to put he onus on the keeper and not the taker. There is no doubt that we have some fantastic players, including some for the future, but I don't think we used our talent both starters and subs to the best advantage, especially when you consider that France were missing some key players.
On a side note I believe we should have been given some other possible fouls in the box but the referee and VAR looked the wrong way. I don't think it's an excuse but rather a comment.

Spot on Mike -Kane should never have taken the second - i said he will miss it should have been taken by another who the keeper did not now so well.
As for the sideways and backward **** how boring.
That world cup was there for the taking and i do blame southgate for this cock up.
International football is possession based, if you give it away it’s difficult and tiring to get it back. To be successful as you seem to want us to be, and rightly so, you have to play that way. If you just go hung how against the better teams, especially, you will just get picked off.
The game against the USA imo we were a bit too negative, but a draw meant we were through to the next round, this took the pressure off the last game, which freed us up to win the wales game 3-0 and win the group . Sometimes you have to be a bit savvy.
Fully understand not going gun ho-but some of the play was so feeble almost frightened to pass forward.
For me a lot of the football was negative .
Agree to a point, however there is so much at stake it’s understandable, a fine balance to be positive when a mistake can be so costly. On the whole I think the balance was about right, even the France game we had chances but didn’t take them.
If someone else took the penalty and missed what would you be saying? I can bet it was “Kane should not be refusing to take them”
His record of taking penalties for England is immense, he’s human, eventually he’ll miss, he’s the captain too so only right he took responsibility. I don’t blame him at all.

Technically, I think our British players have struggled for years, not being comfortable with the ball, although over the years we have got much better, hence why I still think we struggle when passing it around looking for opportunity, quite often looks like, we are looking for ideas (maybe boring the opposition in surrender!!) Quite often it's like watching a City game when we struggle with creating opportunities.
When we finally progress up the field using one touch passing (patterns) we look good.
We do have some very good individual players, Bellingham, Saka, Foden, Grealish, Rice etc that can turn a game.....IMO it's getting there..
As for Southgate, I think he has been really lucky with the route Englands had to do well, in both World cup & Euros and with just that extra 10% could have seen us winning one.. Some of his decisions have to come into question, ie Subs made, selections etc, but he does seem to have a good relationship with the squad and am not sure, sacking him would be beneficial, unless we have a genius coming in to replace..
IMO, a good step would be to retain him but maybe get an assistant (maybe foreign) to give us a slightly different approach..
It's all very fine margins now with many nations catching up in the footballing world.... I think with what we have with the Premier league, we should be leading the way.....I believe we need that little push.... Just my view!!

I don’t agree with taking the knee, never have, but if the players want to, so be it. I don’t think you can blame Southgate, unless of course he’s making them do it.
