Same old same old from England, what might have been. So many passes sideways and backwards and no real threat in 1st half. 2nd half started much better but French subs livened them up and our subs were too late to make any real impact. Perhaps the most creative and in-form player in the squad, Maddison was again ignored when we were crying out for his flair. I've always maintained that Southgate was the problem not the solution, hopefully he'll bugger off and we can get a more tactically astute coach in that won't be afraid to let the handbrake off. Eddie Howe now looks the best of the English coaches and the FA might even agree...

    As another outsider looking in....

I thought it was one of the best games so far in the WC. Both teams with some of the best players in the World, both playing attacking football at their best, and needing to win. France were great on the Counter but we were good at stopping those mainly. Neither team prioritised protecting their goal at all cost, and hoping for a chance as the game wore / bored on like bloody Croatia. Game could have gone either way. Ultimately France were the more effective in front of goal despite England having more of the game, shots on goal and dominating for long periods.

I thought the Referee was terrible, mainly because he let too much go and then under pressure from players, changed his mind both with and without the help of VAR. England were given 2 pens so can't complain too much.

One thing about last night that really irked me was when when several England players asked for a French player to be booked. I like to look at ****tier teams and players do that and smugly think we wouldn’t do that, yet there they were. To prove how weak the ref was, he said no several times then when a third player asked thought “oh I had better then” and did

    Result won't change but,

South American football expert's interesting theory on why Brazil ref was so bad in England vs France
Story by Rob Hoskin • 4h ago

    upload_2022-12-11_23-31-47.png
South American football expert, Tim Vickery, has attempted to explain why Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio wasn’t very good during England vs France.

Sampaio appeared to get a number of controversial incidents wrong during France’s 2-1 victory over Gareth Southgate’s side in their World Cup quarter final.

In the first half, he missed Dayot Upamecano’s foul on Bukayo Saka. It led to Aurelien Tchouameni opening the scoring with a brilliant strike from 25 yards.

Moments later, he failed to penalise Upamecano for his blatant foul on Harry Kane.

Was it inside or outside of the penalty area? VAR ruled that it was outside but Sampaio hadn’t even given a free kick.

Aside from the two controversial first half incidents England believed Sampaio let a lot of fouls go, allowing France to get away with little niggly fouls throughout the match.

Gary Neville: The referee was a joke
It led to a pretty strong statement from ITV pundit, Gary Neville, after the match.

“The referee I thought he had an absolute nightmare, he was a joke of a referee, him,” Neville said.

“I’m not saying that was all down to England’s defeat, I think because people will say it’s just excuses, he was just a bad referee, rank bad.”

    This was from MSN site.

There you go fellas. Seems like others feel the same as you do. As I said, won't change result, but good to know we weren't entirely biased in our assessment of play.

That's absolutely abominable. Authorities should prevent this. Even as a joke, it's in very, very bad taste and may cause Harry some harm, even if it's his own, emotionally. The half-wits that instigated this ****e should remove this crap immediately.
I don't think any one of them would've been able to score in Harry's place. With the intense pressure of the moment, those fools would've shat their pants, I'm sure. :emoticon-0173-middl

Double standards I reckon Hammersmith. Whoever set this thing up really needs a visit from the police…..appalling behaviour and stinks of what happened to David Beckham in ‘98.
    I’m truly appalled

I had a small disagreement with a fella in the pub last night whilst watching the England game. This chap was in a party of about a dozen (male and female) and was loudly - and I thought rather provocatively - cheering for the French. A few words were exchanged from our table to his and one of my party seemed keen to dispense violence. In an effort to calm things down, I went over to have a quiet word. The first thing I asked was if he was actually French, which would have been fine of course, 'No, I'm Iranian', he said, which prompted a discussion about why, as an Iranian living in England, he chose to support anyone opposing England. This didn't go particularly well and when I returned to my seat I was accosted by one of the women from his table who announced that everyone on their table was supporting France and that her reason for doing so was that she was Welsh. I told her that I was Welsh too (my Mum was born in Merthyr), but that didn't seem to cut any ice.

I'm really not sure if the Iranian was out of order or if I was.

Anybody going into a pub in England and loudly supporting a team other than England in a World Cup match is an idiot and asking for trouble, especially if they are doing it simply out of hatred for England rather than actually having genuine support for their opponents.

The same would be true in Germany, France, Argentina etc etc

Im in Ireland, near enough everyone loves to see England lose, it's just a fact of life, I just laugh it off...don't try and explain how the words to three lions are totally misunderstood though, that just makes it worse... grin and bear it, it's the English way :cheesy:
