Maguire is the one positive to come out of that. I thought he was rock solid at the back. Will do his confidence the world of good.
Yep, not good at all but it happens. Brazil in 2002 were easily the best team but scraped a win against Turkey due to a red card that never was, and then got past Belgium due to a disallowed Wilmots goal that even to this day no one knows why it was ruled out. Work to be done but time, and more importantly points, are on our side.
Players immediately very accepting of the draw and performance says it all about the mentality going into that game for me. Gareth sounding more pleased about this result than the Iran game because we didn’t concede says it all too. I get it’s not the end of the world and we should still qualify, but we won’t get anywhere without playing on the front foot.
No it just goes to show that they see the US team for what they are. Decent bloody opposition. They way our fans talk about them is f*cking embarrassing to be honest. US are as good as the B-grade European teams; Sweden, Poland etc. It’s normal to get a drab result at least once in the group games. Scotland last time out. But yeah, we were too negative I agree
It’s not really the result I’m annoyed about. It’s the performance and intensity. USA were decent, but they’re nothing special.
Watching the US was like watching the Saints when we were really on our pressing game. Constantly closing England down, when we had the ball, winning a lot of second balls through sheer weight of numbers around the ball, not scoring when on top but also prone to be split open if the ball was played quickly. Wales will be up for the next game but they lack the quality and the fitness to push us as hard as we were pushed tonight.
True, but we knew a point was a decent result. Why go all out and risk a loss? If that were a knock out match then it would be disgraceful. But at this stage it was pragmatic, safe and probably the best way to ensure we get through to the R16.
It just blows my mind how thick people are. And it’s so true that the thicker they are, the louder they shout. Why do so many people get hung up on the football/soccer thing? I literally stopped giving a sh*t what people call it, when I was about 10 years old.
There became a point in the game where it would have been foolish to go all out for the win. We didn’t need to go ‘all out’ from the start, just play with more intensity and purpose. Pass the ball a bit quicker. Move through the lines. Play triangles around the press. I get it’s not the end of the world, just pragmatic and safe is what has held England back from the very top under Southgate. That we were so keen to do that from the start today doesn’t fill me with confidence going forward.
Anyway I’d rather forget about that game now! Would have enjoyed beating the Yanks but we’re still in a very good position to progress to the business end of the competition.
USA are better than Saudi or Japan. Imagine the meltdown from England fans if we’d lost to either of those! Doesn’t bare thinking about.
It got is to the final of the Euros mind you. I do agree with our talent we could, and should, do more though.
A draw is the 'best' result for me I suppose. I leave for 6 days in Atlanta for work tomorrow morning and a loss would have been unbearable and a win would have probably wound up my bosses. **** though really.
Awful, turgid game. But at least we didn’t lose. Very lacklustre. Not sure why we didn’t bring foden on, think he would have made a real difference. But oh well. Onto the next one
