Belgium are missing a deep lying playmaker. A good tackler, someone who can pick a pass, composed on the ball. Someone like, well, Romeo Lavia for example.
I had very little interest in this game, but am now developing a totally unwanted attachment to Canada. Something to do with being a Saints fan makes a person gravitate towards inevitable disappointment.
Wouldn't be surprised if following another 15 promising Canada attacks that fail at the final phase, Belgium go up the other end and get a second.
Don't think this is finishing 1-0. We're overloading the front to get something, and have basically no one back.
I'm all for Canada giving this a go. But it feels a bit unnecessary - maybe even a waste - to be treating the 66th minute like it's the 86th minute. They're playing well enough, and creating enough, to not need to gift Belgium an easy second on the counter - which is where it feels like this is going.
They are bloody fun to watch too. They are the perfect combination of energetic, erratic and aggressive - plus they are under dogs. Love it.
Even at a lower level, the style of play is about possession. Glad Nico Williams was given some minutes on the pitch. He is a very gifted player. I hope he grabs these opportunities to make an impression.
Liam Miller, you frosted-tipped, Liverpool loanee no-goal-scoring goober, that was a terrible corner.
It sucks to lose on the back of that performance, particularly given the early penalty (which Fonzie probably shouldn't have taken) and the calls that didn't go our way in the first half. But I can't be mad, that was a hell of an effort. Set up to attack from the off against the hardest team in the group, and the number two ranked team in the world, and should have won. Croatia awaits.
This was...not the match I had expected. We basically got FM'd in the World Cup, by the world number 2.
I agree with him on that tbf. They wasted their best years with Martinez like England did with Sven 02-06
