I was reading an article in the Telegraph about our rip off electricity prices. No point posting the link as somebody will immediately complain that they can only read two paragraphs because of the paywall and because they are too stupid to know how to get around it. I wonder what any of those Independence-minded Jocks will have to say when I point out to them that Scottish Power is owned by a Spanish company, Iberdrola, which made £263.4m profit from Jocks in the six months ending in June. Their profits were up 42 per cent because of the crazy way that electricity charges are decided, dependent upon the price of gas. None of that profit going to Jocks, unless they own Spanish shares (currently €11). Of course Independent Jockshire would simply nationalise it without compensating their EU friends. The stupid way that the prices are decided is the fault of the Tory government. As gas prices go up (Putin’s fault) so does the price of electricity because gas-fired power stations are our biggest source of electricity. It has to be said this crazy system also operates across much of Europe. A sensible system would average the price across all the different generating sources. Back in 2015 when the drive to encourage renewables was on, the government introduced a subsidy scheme that guaranteed operators a minimum price – so if electricity becomes too cheap, the bill payer covers the difference. That scheme also has a maximum price but these operators only make up 6.5 per cent of the market so they are quickly diluted on bills. As the gas price has risen, the renewables operators are still getting subsidy but they are also getting big profits. Hunt sought to cash in on this by introducing a new windfall tax, which is estimated to be worth £45bn. Those wind farms created under the guarantee scheme are not subject to the windfall tax because of their maximum price. Not surprisingly, the energy industry does not want reform, pointing out that when prices fall market forces will reduce their profits. They will still get their subsidies though.
