Just seen this thread on another board...

Not a single mention about Formula One being held in the UAE which is no different to Qatar in terms of its human rights and the way it treats their asian workers.

It's strange that some sports can be held in these countries and no problem with it at all - formula one, international cricket, golf tournaments, horse-racing etc. But a football world cup and there's a backlash. I'm not actually looking to point fingers here, just trying to understand why some sports don't get the same criticism but football world cup is?

Initially there was a backlash, but it’s been going on for years so it’s just drifted into the forgotten.

Probably because football is supposed to be the simplest of sports, where teams and individuals compete for glory and not just the moolah. Obviously that's now a bygone era but thankfully there are still a few diehards who hanker after the golden days of Puskas, Eusebio & Pele etc.

I don't remember anything, certainly nowhere near the media hype we have now. I think there's been a cricket world cup there as well.

It's ironic that there's literally a World Tour Championship in golf going on right now in UAE and zero fcks being given in the media or by politicians.

I don't disagree though it's something about human nature, and ppl are manipulated to care or not care.

It's not as bad as Qatar or Saudi though. Nowhere near really.

Both Abu Dahbi and Dubai are westernised and diluted to the point it's now acceptable to most.

UAE has the same laws and punishment against LGBTQ as Qatar.

The way that overseas workers are treated from Asia is absolutely no different.

You mean like the British government promising it was going to level up and look after our nurses. We should be use to this sort of sneaky behaviour Bobby.

Ghana fans have been banned from displaying flags because of the rainbow colours.

I've no idea tbh. Wouldn't surprise me though.

The fact few will be aware of this kind of highlights the disparity in the way different sports are being treated.

Out of interest, and this is not aimed at you, I am merely quoting the LGBGT bit, is the way Qatar view these people as acceptable to some on here?

Just because, you know, the Qatari customs and traditions regarding alcohol are supposed to be accepted (respected even) and that.

Well I've looked at the arrests and convictions for LGBTQ for UAE and Qatar and by far the most are in UAE.

And UAE have have had the most recent in 2017.

Both countries have the death penalty for same sex activity but neither have imposed this.

In all cases I can see the punishment for both countries was prison sentences.

Which in theory means they are not as draconian as Qatar or Saudi.

I get the gay thing, but it's no real difference to the alcohol thing in that it's a religious belief of theirs.

We can't change such ****, so it's blind eyed.

As long as they can get a pint at the Golf or Formula 1, I guess they see it as ok to crack on!

Oh, and the large sums of money thrown at people to shut the **** up.

It tells me both Qatar and UAE are the same tbh.

I appreciate that the death penalty isn't being imposed (in either Qatar or UAE), but I doubt that's the point as far as ppl who are angry about the laws against LGBTQ are concerned.

I'm not aiming this at their religion and their laws. But to me it looks like both have the same stance on LGBTQ yet some sporting events get a relatively free pass being played there, but a football WC gets treated differently.

But then again I wonder what the media reaction would've been if the football WC was being held in the UAE?

Me personally look at how we handle things in this country, and think to myself what is different:

    1. I've not been allowed to have a pint of beer in view of the pitch for decades.
    2. We also ban things such as smoking and the long term aim is to lead to a total ban.
    3. Being gay, wasn't there a case in a London park not that long ago where a gay doctor was beaten to death by thugs.

Oh I should also add, isn't it even illegal for hetrosexual couples to kiss in public, any intimacy, so it's not just gays.
