You'll probably remember POMO from Charles Hughes (FA's director of coaching) back in the 80's.

Basically get the ball wide and then cross the ball into the box and that leads to the most amount of chances and goals. Obviously thing have evolved in many ways since then but even the tika taka sides know you have to use width to stretch defences.

what makes you think Jesse doesn’t like a bit of width now and then

And I am talking football. This narrow thing is all about counter press and breaking quickly through the middle. He might want his ‘wingers narrow’ but wants his full backs getting wide and pinging crosses in… prefers low crosses behind the back line but hey a cross is a cross.

problem is we dont have a left back… and our right back had a confidence crisis at the start of the season but is starting to get a bit more advanced now.

The Marschmeister may also be reining them in a bit due to that ‘space behind the full backs’ thang that everyone seems to be fretting about (ie it would be even worse if he actually let the dogs loose forward as he’d like to <laugh>)

Most of the goals we concede start with the opposition attacking using one of the flanks, not necessarily behind our full backs but stretching our team as a whole from where they were attempting to close down. We're then short of numbers centrally when the ball comes into our box

This seems totally at odds to the Marsche tactic of let them have the ball out wide as they can't score from out there ?

Thought we were discussing about attacking?

So re the theory on marsch. It’s not that teams can’t score from wide, obviously, it’s that it’s less likely to happen than letting them run through the middle of you.

it’s the switch of play to the opposite side that seems to be considered the primary is weakness. But yeh I agree we’ve coughed up chances and goals from the press side too. Either way it seems to be when the centre half gets pulled out to deal with the problem. We don’t seem to adjust to that well enough. If you freeze frame the goals I’d say there’s generally enough players there. They just aren’t always marking someone. <laugh>

That said, a *** packet assessment of our recent goals says::

    fulham: 2 x corners (1 a second phase) and 1 x throw in
Liverpool, 1x second phase after a corner,
Bournemouth: 1x simple work around full back… centre back gets dragged out, leaves spare man at the back post. 1x break from our corner, 1x route one hoof.
    Spurs: 1 x corner
    1x throw in.
1 speculative cross where we weren’t stretched
1x good move cut through the middle of us

A real mix in other words - so whilst we get opened up a bit… the goals, recently at least, have come from all over.

Fair point. I’ve been very bored recently.<laugh>

But I’ll remind you it’s just a game the next time you’re chuntering about how sh*t we are, the players are, the owners are. Etc.

    Don’t think I’ll have long to wait.<laugh><cheers>

With the defending we seem to switch off too much. Don't react to quick throw ins or quick free kicks. We don't seem to sense danger too well.
