His name has been banded around now and again over the last few days, what are peoples thoughts on this? His first season as a manager abroad proved successful however, i would imagine it is a world away from second tier English football.
Always rated him very highly as a player although it does not automatically follow that he will succeed as a manager - I can't say I know enough about him post playing to give an opinion either way
Won't come as Fergie told him to stay where he is to gain experience and he will heed his ex-gaffer (and probably the best manager ever imho) advice http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/15544113.stm Doesn't need the money as he earned shed-loads as a player so tbh we have nothing else to offer him as he is managing his former club where he is worshipped as a God and who are in Europe after winning their league for the first ever time. Lets end this rumour here.
I agree with Fergie, too inexperienced and unproven. Lets not forget what McClaren did in Holland. I'm certainy leaning towards the 'safe' options, managers who are proven in England and especially ones who have a proven track record in the Championship.
It would be a massive risk appointing OGS at this stage of his managerial career. He probably does have talent and has learnt from one of the best of all time but I'm sure he's said he wants to manage in the Champions League with Molde so we probably won't get him anyway. The three I'd be happy with are: Hughes Davies Jones in that order but the Mercury have said that Davies was given an interview & Jones also applied interested but the interest was never followed up. Shame, I think they would have been sound appointments that would definitely get us up there and fighting. Hughes would still be my ideal choice though (discounting the obvious).
I dont think we will go for OGS and Fergie only said the other day that OGS will make a great manager in England when the time is right but said he shouldnt come to England too early I think OGS will listen to what Fergie says alot, OGS was a very under rated football and has had a very good start to management but he doesnt have the experience we need or the owners we are after
I think we can rule out Clark O'Neill > Hughes > Pearson > Davies > Jones Would be happy with any of those TBH.
bring me NIGEL!!!!! worked wondered, thought we would build around him for years! Shoudl neveer have been allowed to leave!!
If Nigel came back would he want to bring Hobbs and Fryatt back with him. Waghorn would come back as he is still our player
They say "never go back" and I think this will be NP's thoughts however, Dalglish seems to be bucking that trend. He did a great job when he was here, could he do it again for the remainder of this season with this bunch of players?
The only player I would take is Liam Rosenior. But I think Pelts is better. Maybe that Robbie Brady but he isn't even theirs. Pearson can work wonders with a pretty ****e squad. Wonder if he'll be any good with millions of cash and inflated egos?
That is the question. It's a difficult one to answer. On the one hand, he did seem to fall out with anyone who had an ego and got rid of a couple of 'flair' players as a result. On the other hand, playing great football isn't always about the individuals. I remember a number of games - QPR home and away, Watford at home, Forest and home, Cardiff second leg, for examples - where we played brilliant football as a team. Sven very rarely achieved a complete team performance. His 3 games against Derby stick out, other than that? I'm struggling. A lot of the time we were all of the place wheras Pearson would have made sure we were organised at least. If we can get these talented individuals playing as a cohesive and confident unit we'll have a great chance of going up. My fear is he reverts to his negative stage for too long (which he has done to steady the ship for a while at both us and Hull) when really this team is good enough already.
If he wants to prove himself you'd think he'd be up for that challenge because it's precisely what a manager is supposed to be able to do. Having money to back you up is pretty rare and this kind of opportunity might not come his way again.. How about a new thread: "Sack [insert name here] now!" Might save time later?!
Nigel has, by all accounts, been playing passing football at Hull so maybe there's been a change of approach from him on that front. The difference was that when he was last here, the squad didn't have much technical ability and so he played to that by creating a workman like team that grafted and was greater than the sum of it's parts. Now, if he were to come back, he would have a squad with a lot more technical ability that would suit passing football as we don't really have the squad for the direct stuff (only one 'target man' and one winger in the squad) so I think the style will be an interesting one. We don't seem to have many ego's in this squad (probably only Beckford) and we know Nigel isn't a fan of those so we might see a re-run of the DJ Campbell situation. That said, Beckford might benefit from Nigel's no nonsense approach to management. Who knows? What I would also say is that , when you look at Beckford's record, when he's first come into the side at his other two clubs, he has taken time to settle in before he started scoring.
