My cousin saw that gig. It was the tour opener and she said it was incredible. Although the crowd response in South America was on another level apparently! <yikes>

This thread is becoming an obituary column sadly , sometimes I think the grim reaper has a flick through my music collection and every time I go on Twitter and see a name trending I dread clicking in it , today was Neil Young and Joni Mitchell both have had recent health problems so I was relieved to see it was about their music rather than demise

I saw him/them a couple of times alongside The Damned and really enjoyed the experience. Along with the Lemmy connection, Nik Turner was mates with Captain, who played on this...

    RIP

This from Paul Gray on Nik Turner...

"Hawkwind's Space Ritual album and '72 tour were a life-changing moments for me; proof positive that another infinitley more colourful and exciting life lay outside the dreary commuter suburbs of Southend on Sea. Play that album today and I still know every note of it...even Nik's crazy sax noodlings are indelibly imprinted upon my brain. Everyone seems to have a lovely Nik story - he was that sort of a guy.

He was an ardent MU member and often used to call me up when I worked for them for a ramble, and I distinctly remember driving down to his Carmarthen farmhouse with Captain back in 2012 for him to add some of his inimitable sax on to a couple of tracks onto our first Sensible Gray Cells album. After a bone rattling drive down a long and potholed track we arrived at his abobe to be greeted by hordes of baying hounds and a grinning Nik and his lovely wife. Carefully navigating our way around the piles dogshit we were made very welcome amidst mugs of herbal tea and his musings on life, the universe and everything.

When dusk started to fall and our work was done I couldn't find my car keys. "Never mind" quoth the great man, "you can crash out here for the night if you want", sweeping his arm magnanimously around the large open plan living room. As its contents seemed to consist principally of a huge snooker table and not a whole lot else I thought probably not, however kindly the gesture was meant, and eventually after much panicked searching said keys were located deep down in one of the pockets of said pool table - a mystery to this day.
I'd love to post one of the tracks he so superbly played on here, but they seem to be no longer available - a situation that Captain and I are currently looking at remedying.

Cosmic travels to ya Nik, and thanks so much for the fantastic music x"

****. He was only a smidge older than me...and somewhere in what remains of my mind, I think that I'm still young...

For me, he came to my attention as one of those 2 names on The Clash first album who weren't there by the time it was released, but his work with PiL really established his credentials as an incredible innovator. He and Jah Wobble were fabulous in tandem.

Joe Strummer said in an interview that he was a spectacular talent but just stopped turning up for rehearsals and Levene himself admitted that he just couldn't see himself in the band anymore, at the time he left. Apparently, he never listened to The Clash album and was amazed at their level of success in subsequent years.

RIP and thanks for the memories.

I would suggest all punk fans take a seat before reading on.....

"RIP Keith Levine, guitarist and founding member of The Clash and PiL.

Keith, at 15, became a roadie for YES (official) 1973 and is rumoured to have had some lessons from Steve Howe.

And considering his punk and post punk credentials he still rated Close to the Edge as one of the greatest albums of all time!"

Actually, I knew all of that....although, I can't say that I agree regarding Yes...and I have heard a fair bit of it. It's just not for me.

    Awesome...pretty much a full house of 12k and I'm hoarse? <laugh>

Wembley is such a **** venue though. Acoustics are poor and trying to get in was horrendous. Fans queueing to get in at 7pm barely made their seats for an 8pm start.

Oh well ...just hope I don't have to wait another 12 years for the next gig!

    I wouldn't agree either <laugh>
Just thought the link somehow amusing. I was in a band in 76 was playing soft prog and standards. Early 77 (after I left) they morphed into a punk outfit to try and get on the 'wave'....<doh>

I've long since accepted that Curtain Call is prog and i'm open to listening to most stuff but Jon Anderson's voice does my crust in. I'm much more likely to listen to Soft Machine or King Crimson...if pushed...quite firmly....at gunpoint. <laugh>
