He must’ve been happy with that cup draw. Means his first home game is Lincoln in the Carabao Cup, and puts a competitive game in place before our first league game after the break.

With only ABK and Salisu missing (or not depending on how the group stages go).

Whilst the fact he is joining a club with a very inexperienced squad, in terrible form and in a relegation fight makes things very hard... the actual timing couldn't be any better.

    1. He has a free hit against Liverpool up first, he takes no blame at all if we lose but if we do get a point (or 3) then it is seen as a huge result.

    2. He then has 5 weeks with the entire squad (-ABK) to get his tactics set up and know the players.

    3. The first proper game in charge is at home against L1 opposition. Perfect opportunity to play a strong side and get off with a win.

    4. Then we have a transfer window followed by a run of games against teams we really need to take points off.

If, and it is of course a big if, he gets things right, then this could be the start of something brilliant.

Running down the wing, the manager shouts to him, "Now, cross!"

To which Lincoln shouts back, "I'm always cross!"

"I want my Southampton team to be a front-footed team, to play attacking football and win games - but we have to get the basics right first and that means keeping clean sheets. With the greatest of respect, we haven't got enough of those."

"We're going to need one or two more [new players in January] but this is a young, hungry and athletic groups. My best work has been with young, hungry and athletic players."

Learning more about Sport Republic through Jones’ presser than we have from Rasmus or anyone else

You know what, he's saying all the right things. The proof will be on the football pitch, but I'm so much more confident in his appointment than I was a few days ago.

Jones on the surprise about his appointment...

"Let's address the elephant in the room: I'm not the biggest name they could've appointed or they spoke to. But the substance is in the work. Sport Republic look deeper than results. They’re not just going to put up with any result we get, they’re going to dissect things. They want substance. They looked at a lot of people and with the greatest respect, I came out highest on the list.

"I think, keep an open mind. All the Southampton fans want to see is a team that works hard and wins games. At the end of the day, I’m more substance than name. I know why I’m here. I’m excited about changing opinion and I've always enjoyed being an underdog."

Also interesting that he mentioned that he scores highly on the metrics that "Sport Republic and Rasmus are looking for".

Singling out Rasmus shows he was clearly the main driver behind this decision.

Something is going on because Tim Sherwood was on there talking about us the other day and he actually seemed knowledgeable and as if he knew what he was talking about.
