It wasn't just the riots that robbed Liverpool of a lot of its architectural heritage. I can still remeber streets and squares of Georgian houses around the Hope Street and Womens Hospital area that would match anything in Mayfair - if they hadn't already been let go to rack and ruin.
And is still happening today unfortunately mate...the enormous 3 story houses on edge lane knocked down for more "luxury apartments", the Welsh streets (including Ringos old house for **** sake why do we do these things?) Various Liverpool Councils over the years have done far more damage to our fair city than German bombers ever managed. I also have to add at this point building on Stanley Park
Dead right. The riots were a symptom of the place being left to go to rack and ruin Even those Georgian ones that are left around Upper Parly and Catherine St which have all now been done up really nicely they wanted to knock down in the 70's and 80's the ****ing idiots.
Know it well. The houses round Newsham are awesome as well some of them. Those big villas on Judges drive are ****ing huge a friend of mine bought one about ten years back (because he's got 8 kids) and it's just amazing now he's done it up. Think it's got 6 or 7 bedrooms, 2 huge reception rooms an almighty cellar and is right on the park. Think he got it for 200grand which is pretty good value eh
I agree, look at the old Irish Centre on Mount Pleasant. A grade 2 listed building that was reclaimed by a new owner that priced the Irish community's lease out of reality and sat on it for the last 20+ years. The building is rotting away yet the Manchester owner wont spend on its upkeep.
Judges Drive and all the big properties on West Derby Rd and Sheil Rd are lovely, how long will they last?
For a short while I used to drink in the Irish Centre on Sunday. Right mottley crew we were - an Englishman, a Scotsman and a Jew BUT all Scouse.
Well anywhere between there and town is a mess still eh Boaler St is worse because all the pubs are just boarded up (they'll get demolished sooner or later) and Kensington Regeneration spent 10 million quid and managed to erect a sign and get a Maccys on the corner. The stupid thing is if they put as much money into Newsham as they did into Sefton Park the bloody area would regenerate itself over time without the Council having to do anything but they can't even do nothing right
Probably a fairly apt tune for this convo:
Well then you know about the interior of the place and how beautiful and historic the building is,yet this manc millionaire **** is happy its empty.
Don't blame the council. They are only continuing a LONG tradition of doing nothing right. Apparently, the old Queen's Mother opened the Bull Ring and said to the Lord Mayor, "Please don't build any more like this. The people deserve better".
And a warm welcome to ALL - provided that you had the price of a pint or didn't ask for a half in a pint glass (so that the alchies could top it up with Yates's Aussie White)!
Shame no one listened to her then eh. It will forever raise a smile with me that during the Thatcher years we had a militant/pro left party that The Old Bag had to crush, then after all those years of Tory gov't we eventually get a Labour gov't and we vote the Liberals in on the council...then The Liberals get in gov't and we've voted in a Labour council You couldn't make that **** up honest to god it is just SO Liverpool
Ah ffs dave.im talking about the decor, the coving and cornice work on the ceilings etc,not the john f kennedy room bar beer prices or the caide mile failte bar food prices.
