I was going to be a doctor, something I wanted to do since my earliest memories. I loved the idea of being that person that saves lives on a daily basis, learning the machine that was the human body and how it worked. I had done my work experience in a hospital, spoken to doctors and picked my A-Levels accordingly. Unfortunately, right around the time I was due to sit my GCSEs, I discovered drugs, women, alcohol and the consequential suicide attempts that go along with them. I wasted my intelligence and spent the next decade running a pub in Leicester while studying Media Stuides and Literature, but I wanted to make sure that the future generations didn't make the same mistakes I did. Teaching is a wonderful profession, but it's not what people think. It's badly underpaid given the amount of work we need to do, we're underfunded massively in terms of school budgets and classes are getting bigger. We can't afford to hire anymore TAs and 6 left in the Summer, so I have 32 kids in my class with just me. I have four children with learning difficulties and two with behavioural problems that are very disruptive. I somehow have to educate all of them to make progress otherwise I lose my job. Which is why I lose my **** when non-teachers go "bUt HoLiDaYs". But I thank you for the kind words, they mean a lot.
It’s never too late to achieve your dream. My wife is a Doctor, several of colleagues didn’t start medical school until aged 30 +. It’s getting more common for Drs to get some life experience in other jobs now rather than the traditional uni at 18 route
Cry me a river toast rack! Look at all the holidays you get over the year... Only joking, keep up the good work! I too wasted my potential when I was young. Turned it around and do alright now.
Some very intelligent posters on This board no doubt There’s also lots of common sense one’s andthe harm that stupid fuxking lockdown has done to all the people of this country is unforgivable and was highlighted by many in here but shouted down by the majority. Friend of my work mate killed himself a few days ago. Mate said he knew he was struggling with lockdown but didnt think he’d do that. The harm this lockdown is doing and will continue to do isnt worth the risk of continuing it Jun 8, 2020 Chazz
You’ll never hear a bad word from me about teachers. The long holiday thing is complete bollocks as teachers work loads through it and far more hours than then should all the other time too. I don’t know of any other profession that has contracts that say you have to work a set number of designated hours (normal school hours) but then an unspecified, unending amount of hours to carry out a list of your other roles Frankly it’s ridiculous and the only way employers get away with it is that vast majority of teachers will work all hours to make sure they don’t disadvantage the kids they teach, or put more work on their colleagues. It’s a vicious circle.
I’m only 34 so perhaps I could, but the cost of going to medical school and the sheer amount of work I would need to do while raising two young children I wouldn’t have thought was possible. Nice idea though.
Anyone thinking the only reason a parent would hire a tutor is because they can’t be arsed to put in the effort themselves is, at best, deluded.
Nailed it, not a lot you can add to that. Deleting social media is something I would love to do but as I run my own company I need to be able to use it for that and find myself getting distracted by the rubbish which fills 90% of all social media channels. We have a zero technology at the table rule, at home and when eating out. The kids have a limited amount of time on the TV/internet unless we are all watching something together. My lad is a promising little footballer and will watch very little other than you tube videos of football drills and then run off with his soft ball in his hands to practice in the hallway. My daughter is older (10) and starting to become more inquisitive of stuff I am not happy with (Tik Tok videos, programmes for older kids/adults etc) and this comes from mates at school who are allowed to do what they like. Rather than ban this we try and monitor it by letting her look at some of it with us next to her and point out how stupid the people making Tik Tok videos actually are. She generally realises quite quickly this stuff is all bollocks and just attention seeking but it is becoming harder to keep her as a child. We have a quiz night, play board games, card games etc but my fear is that soon the pair of them are going to cave into to pressure from their mates and stop wanting to do these sorts of things.
They probably will, though the difference is they’ve had the grounding you’ve given them to not always follow and to question- all we can do
Yep, TV goes off two hours before bedtime to prevent blue light related sleep disturbance. Works a treat.
It all sounds rather wishy washy and controlling to me. I led my kids by example. They watched me doing loads of ridiculous and embarrassing things, and they learned from that example, and are quite well balanced, as well as being very independent as a result, as they're determined to be better. They've certainly done better than the over controlled ones they went through school with.
how's peoples experience seeing a gp? i've not seen a single gp since before the covid started i've wanted to see one a few times, nothing major fortunately i did see a staff nurse at the gp surgery who got me a hospital apt regarding tonsils baffles me how a nurse is working and seeing patients at the actual surgery but doctors are awol? what's going on
Sorry for your experience, I've heard a few people saying this. I have seen a few GPs since Covid started, so there definitely are still some surgeries functioning.
5 week wait down here to get an appointment which is often just a phone call. Just as easy to see someone than having to make a call and then suggest they make an appointment which is another 5 week wait. Bloody rediculous. I hardly ever go myself but in late August got an appointment for October and was put on a 2 week pathway so at least once I did get to see a doctor the treatment received was pretty quick.
