Is Shelvey the only player in our current squad to have ever won the league cup before? You need players with that kind of experience and winning mentality in the team if you want to mount a serious challenge on the cup competitions.
Trippier has won stuff in Spain and Miggy has won BBCmotd goal of the month and I think Eddie has a manager of the month award
Yeah, but I'm talking actual domestic cup wins. You need someone on the pitch who has been there and done it and can instill that onto others around them. Someone like Shelvey.
All three are Champ level, Wood isn't a PL striker. I know I sound like I have some personal vendetta against him, and being fair his goal Sunday was well taken, but where you'd think he would then get confidence from that the rest of the second half he was really dreadful. Very, very simply passes and lay-offs are just beyond his ability. At one point he was nearly at right back, and I couldn't really understand why, he'd just chased the ball back there. Yes, he runs around a bit, but the ability is amongst the worst I've seen. Basically, he's no good for a team who keep the ball or attack at pace. Murphy, yeah, he's just Sammy Ameobi mk2. Tried little flicks or basic dribbling which I'm sure looks decent in training or 5-a-side, but he's woefully easy to dispossess in matches and his end product is really awful. Shelvey, like Wood, has absolutely nothing to offer this style of play. At times Sunday he looked just plain bewildered as everything just passed him by. He wants about 5 minutes to get the ball and then spray it (out of play). Another who no doubt lights up 5-a-side but has no place in the fast paced rigours of PL football. Makes January really easy, mind. We have that young forward joining from Australia which can see Wood disappear. Then we need to buy a modern midfielder like Tielemans or Maddison, and a winger like Diaby or Terrier. We probably do need to revisit left back as well. We've currently got Burn, who for all his effort is limited, but seen as better than Targett. And the sooner Lewis and Dummett are shipped the better.
Wood did well yesterday, and clearly isn't a championship striker cos he's been in the Prem for the last 5 years. Striker for a struggling lower end of the table team yes, but above Champ standard. Ditto Manq who's been usurped from the starting XI, but could easily start for the likes of Soton, Bournemouth, Fulham etc. Darlow definitely is a championship player though, and I get alarmed whenever he gets anywhere near the first team. Still rather play him than Karius though.
Why would you start him after we have won 6 and drawn 1 since he was injured? I don't have the DPP-style abject hate for him but I just don't think he fits our current style of play and with Bruno playing we don't need another long-ball player. Also with Lascelles out, its noticeable that our distribution from the back is so much better, although Botman had a bit of a nightmare on Sunday, so again negating the need for Shelvey. I suspect he will start Longstaff, Guimares Willock and Almiron in midfield and keep Joelinton on the bench on Saturday. Shelvey can play against Crystal Palace.
Is this the Palace thread then? I hope we play a strong team, hope Pope plays, keepers don't need a rest.
Totally agree Jak, all valid points. But I think you're missing the real purpose of this thread - to wind poor DPP up. Now, imagine him just about to sit down to unwind during his lunch break, after a torrid morning of constant abuse from school kids. He's vulnerable. He's looking for something to improve his mood, something positive about NUFC. Now is the time to strike. Now is the time to express to him why that **** Shelvey should not only start this match, but EVERY match. Come on Jak, it's time to edit your answer. You know it's the right thing to do.
Not sure why but I hadn't realised Shelvey was only 22 when he signed for us. **** me he's been here a long time!
Actually if you read the first post of the thread it explains why it was created. Its because @ToonArmy1892 thinks that @Shelvey should come back in. @Welshie is above the petty jokes and ribbing of individual posters so please stop derailing the thread and treat it with the seriousness it deserves. Too many of our threads are collapsing into taking the piss out of individual posters at a time when we should be concentrating on the football we are starting to play. I think if it continues I may have to start deleting posts and requesting bans for offending posters.
Sorry for being an arse Jak. Where do I get my account deleted? I'm done. Never coming back. I said I'm never coming back. So don't try to stop me. Don't. I'm leaving now. Aaannnnyyy minute now...
I reckon it's time we just said Sod it and get Obi a mods job, make Chaos a mod too whilst we're at it
It's like Dr Pepper ads - what's the worst that could happen? Would be no worse than our current Dad's Army of: - Albert sleeping in ditches, or sitting in some foreign bar - Nev popping in twice a month - Trev forgetting what day it is, let alone that he's a Mod - Jak our only sensible Mod poster
Ridiculous, it's actually really funny that we have been reminded that Chippy wore yellow pants, Obi is fat and someone fell in ditch, in every single thread, every single day, for 10 years...
