Well, unfortunately for Vin, his logic that it is those who were most vocal of Ralph, is just a dig at people for the sake of it, considering so many people who had been pro Ralph for a long time, have been questioning the logic and risk of appointing Jones. For me, I am underwhelmed, but I dont know what would have made me overwhelmed, and I will give him a clean slate and full support. Not that he is interested one bit in what I am
Bit catch 22 eh? Difficult to keep the same team when they aren’t playing well. Just get criticised for that instead
I’m not digging and I’m not being pessimistic. I’m just being realistic. It’s a fact that this is a huge risk and that a club in our position (premier league regulars) could attract a higher calibre of manager than this purely based off records alone. As mentioned, Ankersen supposedly has a good record of selecting managers. But he’s not done it for us, so he hasn’t earned my trust yet. It reeks to me of doing things on the cheap and maybe the money that we thought was there isn’t there. But time will tell. I hope Ankersen is right and we have found a diamond in the rough.
The compensation to Luton will probably be a few million? He's on a long contract I think. There are probably cheaper options.
16% win ratio at Stoke from 38 games is a bit of a worry, but Stoke haven't exactly got much better since he left? Suggests the problem there is/was bigger than the manager. On a separate note, Liam Delap's not done very well at Stoke, either.
Yep I think he is contracted until 2027 - so just shy of 5 years. What does a Championship manager earn nowadays? £1m/ year?
I don't get the Sturrock hatred ... he was not a bad manager, he just didn't get the chance here because the squad and the board didn't like him. They thought they were better than him. His record was sound. 5 wins, 2 draws and 6 defeats. We kicked him out and paid the price with relegation that season.
Jones is an enormous risk, and not the choice I'd make. But as I said yesterday, I can understand why his tactical approach would appeal to our management, given the player archetypes they seem to be targeting. We're building toward a fast, aggressive team that presses high and turns that pressure into quick scoring chances, and that seems to be his style. But having the right style =/= being the right manager for the job, so they're putting an awful lot of faith in it working at this level.
Not only has he not done it for us, but (I would suggest more importantly) he hasn't done it in the PL. Smith and Frank both proved to be good appointments. But they were Championship appointments. Furthermore, Brentford have been a club on the up for a while now (even going back to before Ankersen arrived). We haven't. As I recall, the turnaround started with Rosler, then Warburton, then Smith, and now Frank. Warburton arguably benefitted from Rosler's success; likewise Smith from Warburton, and Frank from Smith. Particularly so in Frank's case, given that he was Smith's coaching staff already. That isn't to belittle any of their achievements (I really rate Frank, for example) - but I do think it limits the comparison to our situation.
If people are happy with this they need their heads examined. If the sum total of our ambition is to appoint a manager who's in charge of one of the smaller clubs in the Championship and couldn't cut it at bloody Stoke, then it's absolutely appalling. Back to a Dell sized mentality again from the board. People really should have listened when they told us just to be grateful for being in the league. We're a decent club with a strong PL history. Our rivals are signing managers with top European pedigree. We're raiding Luton. Luton. Thanks SR.
Quite agree. In fact I don't get hatred of any manager in a personal sense, it's a game we're passionate about and whilst some of our managers have taken some real and in some cases, vile stick, for poor results, it's not from me. I judge only on results and not whether I like them or not.
Listen, I know you’re really passionate about things all being terrible and whatnot but if you really look into Nathan Jones’ early 2000s WWE run there’s a few fun matches where he really shows potential. Like this one against future murderer Chris Benoit!
You wanted the manager out Lincoln, he's out, presumably you knew you wouldn't be picking the replacement?
In fairness. No one could have predicted we’d go shopping in the bargain bin again after we finally spent some money in the summer
We haven’t had much ambition in our history, except when we bought our way out of League 1 and the Championship (sort of). Which is a completely different kettle of fish to the money in the PL, and we were one of the bigger clubs at that level (still not the biggest) Other clubs have been taken over by more ambitious/wealthier owner because they are much more attractive than us as we are a small club punching above its weight. Unless there is some billionaire fan knocking around who wants to plough loads of money in, then I’m not sure what more you can expect? Did you really think someone like Lopetegui or Emery would ever come to a club like ours? If you did then you are the one who should probably get your head examined
