I'm being realistic. He's not exactly a draw for the quality we need in Jan is he? He's really what we're aiming for? This combined with comments made by the club in recent months have told me exactly what the owners think of our prospects and ambition. Forever little ol' Southampton. Feels like the club has accepted we're going down and have decided to go with a championship manager to go with the championship level squad.
Jesus Christ. Trust saints. My big worry is that we have a squad of premier league prima donnas. Are they really going to want to play for an unknown? I’m thinking prowsey etc. are gonna be looking at this going… what can this guy teach me? The other worry is what’s he like at transfers & spotting players. At least we knew Ralph had a pedigree there. Massive gamble really
0 - strongly disagree! It doesn't feel at all like the club has accepted we're going down nor do, I think, the majority of posters on here or fans in general. I'll believe it when, if ever, it becomes a mathematical certainty.
If appointed I’ll back him, but on the face of it I’d have to say it feels like a poor choice. Happy to eat my words later on. He’s done well at Luton but that implosion at Stoke is still concerning. I’d rather hoped we would be setting our sights a little higher.
Amazing. Some of the more vocal Ralph critics seem already to have made up their minds about someone we're maybe talking to about the possibility of choosing them as perhaps being our next manager. And the verdict? They expect disappointment. As always, I'm looking forward to it, whoever joins us. I expect our next manager to have us finishing top half. I'm not just saying it, I truly expect it. Try optimism. It's great. Vin
Jesus Christ. Trust saints to pick a left field candidate to be the messiah that will lead us to the sunlit uplands of a top ten finish. Oh happy days.
I haven’t made up my mind. Will back him to the hilt obviously. Good luck to him and the club. But I remember many experiments in the past with young players and inexperienced managers… and shortly after that we were in league one
Good read, looks a good fit. From the thread. "This is Sport Republic’s first manager choice. After appointing Dean Smith and Thomas Frank at Brentford, I trust a group of people with Rasmus Ankersen involved".
I think most of us agree that Nathan Jones is not the name we expected. Do we really want a championship manager? Hell no but it is what it is. You never know we might be surprised
Great thread. As pointed out by SA, Rasmus Ankerson was involved in procuring both Dean Smith and Thomas Frank at Brentford, so you would like to think he knew one end of a decent manager from another.
I thought we had a **** championship level squad? But they are also premier league prima donnas? It’s just not true. Large chunks of our squad have limited premier league experience or need to prove a point You also seem to have taken everything that has ever been displayed about the type of person and character JWP is - and reversed it. He is not suddenly Cristiano Ronaldo (who is largely a model pro anyway but I couldn’t think obviously over the top prima donna player)
I'm going to hold my hands up here when I first heard Jones was our number one choice my initial thought was the name isn't sexy enough and he has no top flight experience. Matthias Jaissle sounds much better. Don't get me wrong I'd much rather we got Jaissle but there's no indication he was ever interested in the job. If Graham Potter can make it in the PL there's no reason Nathan Jones can't. If no one gives him a shot in the PL how can anyone know if he's good enough or not? I still have concerns, don't get me wrong, but Ankersen is no fool. Thomas Frank was an unknown before he took him to Brentford. Let's give this a chance.
