Exactly, as of course they spend £220+ million on a Premier league club and they will just try to lose it all on purpose. We all have opinions, but some fans are so wide of the mark (not you LTL, just quoted you to agree). We have to get out of the mindset that we are owned by Goa and broke. If SR think this is the way forward they would have researched it and won't be knee jerk. Makes sense keeping Selles and NJ is fluent in Spanish too. Warming to this one as it was initially so out of the blue (to me), I was a bit shocked. Then I was shocked for the same reasons with Pochettino.
You were told be careful what you wish for. Having said that you can't write the bloke off before he has had a chance to show what he can do or even been appointed for that matter.
We might not keep Selles - Jones might want to bring his own backroom staff in. Will have to wait and see
If we appoint Jones then so be it. On the face of it, it doesn't look ambitious. It's not flash. He doesn't come from some exciting football outpost in Europe or beyond but he will obviously have something that Sport Republic feel will suit our ethos. Plenty of successful managers have come from limited footballing backgrounds or fought their way to the top ... - Jose Mourinho was a translator and previous lower league footballer - Arsene Wenger had a limited professional career before totally changing the way we approach professional football in England - Thomas Frank only played amateur football - Steve Cooper never got out of the Welsh league - Jesse Marsch only has an MLS playing background ... Graham Potter, Eddie Howe, Marco Silva ... even Jurgen Klopp was relatively unknown as a player beyond Mainz. I think gone are the days of the managerial merry-go-round. Nowadays, they are brought in based on statistics, tactical astuteness and by showing their attributes to suiting a clubs way of working and strategic plan. If we interview Jones, he impresses with his plans and then earns the right to lead Saints then it will be an appointment based on our teams having had tracked his progress and considered him to fit our profile. It will not be a knee-jerk reaction.
So far as I can see he was scouted and I think I read he had been approached previously. His record with Luton where he worked wonders on a modest budget and led the club into the Championship playoffs last season deserves notice. I'm looking forward to seeing what he'll bring to the club.
On the same page as you. Obviously the club have done their homework on this guy. I'm excited to see what he's all about.
Sturminster Newton. That brings back memories for me. In a previous incarnation as a NVQ assessor I had to visit a client there every month. Fecking long drive from Southampton, especially when you get there to be told “She’s phoned in sick”. Nice countryside.
Off topic - that was in the Salisbury and District League and when I started there were 8 divisions - last time I looked online there is one now. I mean surely this must be where football is going so wrong in this country. The very last league I played in was an 8 division league, it's 3 now. On topic - I think everyone needs to take a breather, if the club takes on Nathan Jones, give him a chance, he's probably not had players of this standard or the resources and possibly the backing before. If the team plays crap unattractive football and keeps losing, fair enough, but not one of us can see in the future - I mean have you seen this Forum's Prediction League? That's just scores and a couple of goal scorers every week and it is carnage.
Where has the narrative that Sport Republic thing the Turkish club are bigger than Saints come from? As usual it is impossible to really tell if people seriously believe it but some certainly seem to (not necessarily here) One club has had circa 200m invested in it. The other probably less than 10% of that. I guess there was some bizarre mistranslation/lost in translation moment. Or a reference to the potential catchment area for fans (even then that might not be true) I just keep seeing it
I don’t have a problem with that tactic. If you are playing a pressing game possibly best to launch the ball then win the knock down or press the player trying to control it, before they pass through the press.
Probably the wrong thread for this but did we ever hear anything on what SR did with the loan we took during covid?
