The one on Figgy the other week was worse, that was attacking a ball in our box where the attacking player knew full well he was there and defending the cross, the outcome was a lot worse (bleeding all over the place) yet somehow that only earned a yellow. Refs need to start being far more consistent, I think we should appeal it.
I’m sorry but I’m going to have to disagree with most on here. Feet shouldn’t go that high in football. It’s dangerous play. Think of how you would feel if you were playing and the opponent was doing that to control the ball. If it was the norm, there would be a hell of a lot of injuries in 50/50 challenges. I’m not saying he knew he was in a 50/50. But he knew what risks he was taking with his foot that high. Poor decision-making.
Frankly, I thought it was a red also, but I do think it was more of a collision rather than Oscar being reckless or out of control. He just tried to take the ball down to hold it up, and the guy came in behind him at the same time and there was a coming together. There was no intention, so I would hope if it is deemed a 3-match ban intially, then they will appeal and IMO should get it reduced to 1 match.
There is no way for that to happen though. A one game ban is for a professional foul, such as intentionally denying a goal scoring opportunity. It’s either a red card and a 3 game ban or it’s not.
It was either do that or watch the ball go past him without making an effort… it’s probably a red on the balance but he thought he was bringing the ball down unmarked the Millwall defender came from a blind spot
I guess we just have to wait and see, you could well be right, they go with what the ref says to protect their integrity unless it is an obvious error, and probably in this case, even though I think it is wrong, they will side with the ref's opinion. I hope not but we all know they rarely go against the officials.
that's the thing it's not going to be deemed as an obvious error won't be over turned 3 game ban is harsh though, completley unintentional
Already said they’re not going to appeal it, just speak to the ref & see if he was recommending a 1 or 3 game ban. I’m not sure if they can appeal the length or not, the problem is, if they can & the decision goes against them, it’s at least an extra match added, so probably not worth it. I think the ref might say it was accidental & that might be enough for a one match ban.
I know exactly what you mean and I agree it was a blind spot/no intent. I just think due to it being an ‘illegal’ and dangerous move, it is a justified red card. 3 game ban is harsh of course.
As far as I know, they write up any reports after the game without any outside influences, with the exception of any conversations had with players or managers after the game.
I think you're wrong about Baxter - he certainly has developed a worrying hesitancy to claim the ball when it crosses the six yard box. However, this probably has more to do with a (temporary) dip in confidence than any lack of courage.
You'll never get consistency when the rules in some areas are so subjective. Incidentally that's one reason VAR is never going to work.
anything that relies on someones interpretation will always be inconsitent to make something like the oscar incident consistent, you would need to make some base rules such as if a players foot reaches as high as shoulder height or above, it's an automatic red card regardless of contact etc etc but then how high is a shoulder height? would that mean against a tall player, you can kick higher? so many variables does that mean overhead kicks are a no go it's just not possible really without majorly altering the rules and ultimately changing football
If that's the case, then every attempted overhead kick is also dangerous play. I don't necessarily disagree with it being a red. It's just one of those things that 9 times out of 10 will be an absolute nothing incident. On this occasion, someone stuck their head in and it's a red because he caught him, even if he didn't really do anything different to what players do all the time by raising his foot.
I’m trying to think who I saw do it the other week maybe Foden or silva and they plucked the ball out of the air Stunning bit of skill but a player there and he’d have took his head off
It's the lack of consistency that makes it so infuriating. We had the tackle on Seri the other game, can't remember the opposition, but although he won the ball, the follow through was reckless, dangerous and intentional. It was a horrific challenge, yet we didn't even get a free kick. The one yesterday, Oscar had no idea that Cresswell was there and just tried to take the ball down. It's so innocent, but there's just no consistency. And then Cooper elbows Alfie Jones and nothing.
Absolutely agree. I thought it would be a siege the second half but for a large part of it I actually thought we took the pace out of the game by passing it very effectively across our back four and Woods/Seri calm in front of the back four. The best I've seen us do that. It was only in the last few minutes we hoofed a few upfield and conceded possession too easily.
Saw the red card incident again slowed down. On balance, it’s probably a red. Their player wasn’t even leaning down for the header so it was definitely a high boot by Oscar. In that situation, the ref has clearly judged that their player has more of a right to go for the ball with his head than Oscar does with his foot and I don’t disagree. Not malicious but still a dangerous high boot and probably a red. However, I hope the club appeal a 3-match ban as only a 1-match ban is warranted imo. Even some of the Millwall players knew it was unintentional and an attempt for the ball. One Millwall player started getting in Oscar’s face and one of his teammates (Malone I think) came over, calmed him down and told him to back off from Oscar as it was a genuine accident.
