Just having a bit of a laugh on the "This may save your life...." thread, (and no, I'm not a sadistic bastard, at least not since I burnt some ants with a magnifying glass back when Heath was PM) and I quoted Dick Emery. Whilst I realise everyone is more concerned about the WBA game tomorrow, my quote got me thinking about all the comic geniuses that have given me a good laugh, esp. when I was down (which is most of the time, hmmphh). Besides Dick, there was Benny Hill (legendary), Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan, Eric Morecambe, Ernie Wise, Michael Crawford, nee Smith, (Betteee!), Arthur Lowe (You stupid boy), the Two Ronnies (It's good night from me...), Rik Mayall and the list goes on. Just noticed they're all gone. Oops, sorry Michael. Thanks Guys. You are all true comic legends. And sorely missed. From your end, do any come to mind?
First love...."I'm sorry I'll read that again" on radio,,,with Tim Brook Taylor, Graham Garden, John Cleese Jo Kendall and Bill Oddie I truly loved the early French and Saunders too Last time I really really laughed was at Mark Thomas, a right leftie free speech comic...but then I found out that free speech doesn't extend to his wife telling the press about his many affairs. ...Very disillusioned after that
I'm familiar with TBT, GG and BO aka The Goodies (great show back in the day) and of course JC, DF and JS. My earliest memory of Cleese was of course Monty Python's Flying Circus and my favourite skit was the deadly joke. Laughed for days after that. Not sure about JK. Her name rings a bell, but can't quite hear the melody. Never heard of MT here down under. Can't blame you about being disillusioned, going by what you've said about his affairs. Unfortunately, many of us guys tend to think with our Ds rather than our Bs. Just goes to show, "can't trust a book by its cover".
Seen some great stand-ups over the years, but my top three have been... Billy Connolly Dara O'Briain Omid Djallili
Who? Sorry, like I posted to Beth, there are some British comics that were never aired in Sydney. Not to my knowledge anyway.
Here's a few more of the comedies that were aired in Oz. Only Fools and Horses, Are you being served?, Man about the house, Yes Minister/ Prime Minister, Doctor in the House (a slew of writing talent there) and its sequels Doctor at Large, Doctor Down Under (absolutely loved the brit ones, not so much the aussie one), The two Ronnies, Morecambe and Wise, The Benny Hill Show (a staple in our house, even my parents loved him, just rude enough without going over the top), The Young Ones, Alfresco, The Sketch Show, Red Dwarf ... I could go on, seriously. So many great shows. It's a wonder I got any study done.
Thanks Staines. I'll have to look that up on you tube. Faaark. Penny just dropped. You got me Stainesy. Hey, it's 5:20am here in Sydney, so give me a break. Should really be asleep. Luckily no work on Saturday. BTW, haven't heard from Ellers for some time. Where is that old R? As far as Bracknell is concerned, didn't even know he/she existed.
I saw Billy Connelly live in the early eighties. Left the theatre with aching sides. Absolute genius.
What gets me these days is when they show the likes of Dad's Army the announcer claims "that this program contains language that some may find upsetting"..... seriously!!!!!!! still a brilliantly written series and funny 50 years after it was first shown.......... Never see 'Allo 'Allo these days either as it offends too many people.......... get a life for feck sake......
