Yea I think you're right, it was against Chelsea. The CL appears to be where we're really struggling at corners, conceding at least one against each of our 3 group opponents.

    Would certainly merit further investigation
(better average crossing quality / player movement
from opposition at this level ?? ) .

Our set-piece coach only does offensive set-pieces, apparently.
Can't remember where I read that, though.
Hard to argue with his success at that end, but we need work on defending them.

I've said it before, but we need Son up the pitch when we're defending set-pieces.
He's useless aerially and pretty poor defensively, but his pace would force teams to react.
We could also us Moura in the same manner, but he's good in the air.

Talking of further investigation....is their coach going to get a retrospective ban or fine for encroaching 5m onto the pitch, potentially interfering with play?

I thought he was going to tackle Kane at first.
They've got plenty of time to consider it though, as Marseille won't be affected for a while...

    Eh? <confused>

That's like getting in a car for a driving lesson and the instructor tells you he can't teach you how to reverse.

Not really....inventing good set pieces is a creative role. Defending set pieces is an organisational role. Different skill set so different people needed.

Right...but...to create set pieces that are effective, you have to have an expert grasp of how the organisational side of the coin works and subsequently how to out-manoeuvre it...am I missing something?

Having the ability to understand how something works isn't the same as being able to coach people on how to do it. Set piece creation isn't really a coaching role at all. Defending set pieces definitely is.

I did think when it looked like we were out, perhaps we'd be better off in the Europa, then POW, I thought Martin Chivers had returned. Turned out to be a Spurs Viking in disguise. I still suspect we wont go far.......but then we went crazy a while ago and reached the final.....so who knows? Maybe Sonny will return soon?......and Sanchez will be transferred......?

If I remember rightly, Vio's supposedly created over 3,000 separate attacking set piece scenarios, so it's no surprise he's not worked on defensive ones, probably hasn't found the time!

It's certainly proven a good addition to the coaching staff though because I don't think I remember Spurs actually having a reputation of being dangerous from set pieces in the past, Eriksen was good at them for a while but we'd probably get 2-3 goals a season from it and most of them purely from a direct freekick that he scored, we've already gotten about 8 or 9 this season (I think) from corners or indirect freekicks.

Of course, I'd say it just simply helps having a set piece specialist too, I don't know if Southampton have a Vio equivalent or not but when you've got Ward-Prowse it's probably a case of saying "do your thing, James!". Likewise with de Bruyne at City and Maddison at Leicester. So I think with having Perisic, whose indirect freekicks and corners are top tier, it's a lot easier to create and score from, especially with someone like Vio who can train him and the team on what to do in scenarios, not sure what Perisic is like from direct freekicks at the moment but if it meant getting Kane off them then that'd be an immediate improvement!

Looks like how a team who play in the Champions League should pass it around

Now imagine if someone could actually get it over the wall on direct free-kicks! <laugh>

Sessegnon playing RCB? Passmap's all wonky because of changes during the match.
