Yeah, but apart from the roads and the sanitation, what have the romans ever dine for us?

Read an interesting article about railways a few days ago.
It was a question as to why tracks in the US were 4 feet 8.5 inches.
They tracked it back to the UK tracks. A couple 1000 years back they went.
Aparently axles on wagons were that width because of the ruts caused by romans when they invaded.
The width of the wheels on roman wagons were the same as the chariots used for fighting.
The wheels on chariots were designed to be the same width as the backsides of two horses.

So the romans gave us standard guage railways.
4 foot 8.5 inches or two horses bums.

You are so bleedin lucky to be able to squeeze past on your way to more fertile lands ... I had to go behind enemy lines on occasion to pick my daughter up from Wind Street after her weekly booze-binge
Thankfully she has just left Turktown for Uni in Cardiff to study law

Football over so a few more chores before dark.
Time to put a bale in for the calves.
Not quite living the dream, but not half bad.<cheers>

You've got a tractor to play with for goodness sake.
And try not to mention bale when Sparkey could be about.
    Enjoy

    Calves
Yeah, I keep forgetting about the toys.<laugh>

Calves fed. Time for chaos on the roads.
We've had sheep grazing a neighbours field a couple hundred yards up the lane.
Not worth loading them in a trailer so will run them out of a gate, up the road, in through a gate.
    Well, thats the theory anyway.<doh>

    No drama.
It was only a dozen pedigrees that were tupped a few weeks back. The commercials are with the tups now.
They happily followed a bucket of corn once they were out of the field.
Daughter like the pied piper, mrs remote making sure they didnt pass the gate on the right.

Red tip a bit more active. Are there a few missed or has the colour rubbed off? Fine looking beasts though.

Only had one tup in with the pedigrees (only one pedigree registered). Changed the colour of the raddle half way through so we know which were tupped 1st cycle and which 2nd so we have an idea which will lamb early or late.
As the raddle dries some dont get marked as much but all done.
We've two tups in with the commercials. 2 different colours for the 2 tups and 2 other colours for the 2nd cycle.
Early january and we'll have them scanned to see how many each is having.

Today's non-football related fun is spending 4 hours manning the Poppy Appeal stand at Cribbs Causeway shopping centre with Mrs Brizzle.

    IMG-20221030-WA0000.jpg

I am however still rocking my 2019 Cardiff City poppy too... Good job as I've met 3 fellow Bluebirds already.

One of those days where 'living the dream' isnt all its cracked up to be @clingo .

    Started ok.
Took the car to the local garage for service and MoT. Then a mile and a half stroll along the river with the dog to get home.

Out to do our chores. The temperature has dropped 6 or 7 degrees and its peeing down.
Going to do an absolute minimum, unless theres things to do in the shed.

3 very soggy doggies running around the paddock.
Daughter's two can stay in the kennels until she comes home.
Not letting them in mrs Remote's car in that state.

Didnt quite go according to plan.
Just about to leave and mrs remote gets a text from daughter asking if we'd left. Should have lied and said we had.
Big list of jobs, largely under cover.
One of the calves not been well and not getting up.
Can we stand it up and make sure it drinks.
Easier said than done. Its only 8 months old but weighs about 150kg, is an awkward shape and doesnt have handles.
I now smell of cow $h!t and pi$$.
Takes ages to wash out of your skin so will no doubt get wafts of it when eating tea.<doh>
Got easier after that. 9l of formula milk split between the 3 little ones (there are 18 already weaned), a few scoops of corn for the bigger ones, then the bomb shell.
    Take the dogs home<grr>

Now sat in the kitchen with a brew trying and failing to keep 3 mucky dogs at bay.
Kitchen and utility room floors going to need mopping.
Keeping my mucky clothes on for a bit or decent ones will need washing.
    Happy days.<laugh>

Yesterday saw aome rewards for our labours. Home grown lamb with veg from the garden

I've done nothing today other than take the dogs for a walk (twice <doh>), sat down and had a Peroni (or 2) about 4pm this afternoon.

Chicken and ham pasta bake just gone in the oven and shall have it with a bottle of Primitivo shortly.

Just don't know how I manage it all........<laugh>

We only have 3 hens and a cockerell, but from monday they'll have to stay in their stable. Its 12' by 12' and has perches and trestles, cages and nest boxes, so they wont get bored and will have plenty of room.

Dont know how big places manage, but ours certainly dont look their best after a few months in. Mites can be a problem.
They're usually free range, just being kept in overnight. Mrs remote does spoil them.

They definitely need more feeding when they're kept in. Plenty to eat around the cow shed and fields.

My major concern will be availability of turkeys for Christmas.
Will get our order in with the butcher this week.
