It's the monarch and head of government's first overseas trip. Regardless of what we think of the individuals it's still a big deal diplomatically.
Given that other world leaders are going to COP and we are literally the presidential selection and are handing it over, it's rather idiotic for Sunak not to go. I mean it's more bad optics for them, which I am all for. There has been a small surge in the predicted polling, as it ve expected however, it's not as much as they would have hoped and decisions above will be part of the reason why.
Maybe Truss got her phones mixed up and accidentally picked up the hotline to Russian Conservative Party donors in the Kremlin by mistake
Prior to Boris Johnson bulldozing his way into Downing Street the Tories were reasonably well organised and the government was functioning. The atmosphere of chaos, that Johnson always creates around himself, didn't actually work in Number 10. The bullying, favouritism and usual practice of setting people against each other allowed him to put on his routine performance of bluster, avoidance and lack of attention to even the most important of details, minor details didn't get a look in. Appointing Cummins as his Chief Adviser and enforcer was a typically divisive move and Sajid Javid soon resigned after the inevitable disruption. Johnson was never going to last because he had no real interest in actually putting in the hard graft but that wasn't critical. The real damage is that he not only split the party, he smashed it into endless factions who are now fighting against each other. We're left with a party where open criticism, of colleagues, is common practice and the knives are out with any sense of unity gone. Sunak says he's bringing integrity and accountability, don't make me laugh.
Difficult to try and forecast what will happen in a couple of years' time. For example, cast your mind back, if you can too two years ago. Would you have forecast we would be where we are now? I certainly wouldn't. And we cannot ignore the fact that the current high inflation that is causing problems to every country in Europe, and most of the rest of The World, all stems from Russia invading Ukraine and The West imposing Sanctions on Oil and Gas from Russia, so destabilising the Energy Market. I have no objection to this approach, but we were all warned from the beginning that there would be a price to pay for this policy. But if I was to try any sort of crystal ball gazing, I would see Rishi, riding at full gallop to occupy the middle ground, and taking the vast majority of his MPs with him, particularly those with marginal or recently 'New Blue' Seats. Meanwhile Sir Kier, will be manfully trying to drag his left wingers towards that same territory, and having a hard time of it. Whichever wins that race SHOULD have the best chance of winning a majority.
There's over a hundred world leaders in attendance ... ... Sunak's presence won't make worldwide headlines. He's PM by dint of being the last man who was prepared to take the job on. He was totally unopposed and no one even knows who voted for him. Sorry but he's an irrelevance because no one will believe anything he says or that he has any real backing.
To the rest of the world the UK, it's Prime Minister and the Conservative Party are a basket case and a laughing stock.
It doesn't matter who the individual is. Like when Trump was in. It's the fact that it's the UK Prime Minister's first overseas trip. All about soft power and influence. Egypt would absolutely make a big deal of it if Charles turned up. Same with Sunak.
And that's when it becomes purely a matter of opinion. Sunak doesn't carry any weight on the world stage imo. He has no track record and isn't even elected to the post.
But the office of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom does. This is getting a bit like when the solution to Trump being President was to tell him to **** off. Except you're not telling him personally to **** off when he's President, you're insulting the USA.
It's been thoroughly trashed and degraded recently ... ... I don't think anyone could truthfully argue with that. Johnson and Truss weren't worthy of the title tbh. One is a proven serial liar, in office, and the other totally useless in office. The position is so damaged they couldn't even manage to muster a single credible alternative to Sunak ... ... Johnson lied again, he didn't believe he would win which is why he ran away.
International diplomacy doesn't give a toss about the temporary status of individuals taking up the post - that's my point. They'll be gone soon enough. It's still a big deal.
