A misleading headline designed to shock (and from Fox News surprise, surprise). The research used mice that were prone to develop severe covid to find out what part of the virus determines the severity of illness in order to improve future treatment options. Researchers altered the spike protein to study the effects on the mice. Eight out of ten mice died when exposed to the altered variant, compared with 100% that had died when exposed to the unaltered variant (remember, these were mice that were prone to getting the disease, not regular healthy mice). So the death rate actually dropped. The conclusion was that the decisive element in determining severity was not the spike protein.
