I’m not upset by your “he’s turning London into Karachi” comment. Just think it’s a bit bigoted and moronic but that’s about par for the course.
Khan has little interest in the rise in crime including murders in London. He is British-Pakistani and seems to be in the same mindset as those authorities in Karachi, the most dangerous city in Pakistan. That mindset is, crime will go on regardless, there are more important things to think about like bicycle lanes. It's a cultural point.
He and others who get to select our pm (if this one goes to them) are the reason why Sunak wont get the votes. He's got the wrong colour skin. Said it from day one, there's no point pretending otherwise.
Nothing to do with that Bob. Badenoch is one of the favourites of the Tory membership due to her right wing views, and she's black. Membership, or some, haven't forgiven Sunak for what they see as stabbing Johnson in the back. Hopefully though, Sunak will come through this time. His cautious, prudent approach to the economy has proved to be right where Truss was wrong.
Fact is that (somehow), Johnson is very popular with Tory Party members. Can't understand that myself given what he did whilst in number 10. Maybe it is his charm, maybe it is because he's white British, but the party members have very short memories. When I first read that Johnson was returning to enter the race, I genuinely thought it was a joke. The fact that half the country is suffering from a cost of living crisis, and he's on holiday in the Carribbean shows just how different his world is from the vast majority of the public. One minute he was sunning himself on the beach, then he saw an opportunity to wiggle his way back into power and he was on the first plane home. Just doesn't look right to me at all. Politically, if he came back, surely that'd give Starmer the right to demand an immediate general election and take the decision to the country.
As an outsider, I find it amazing that Penny Mordaunt can only muster only a handful of backers at this stage (while Johnson is even seriously being considered - that’s f**ked up surely?).
I think Boris is only interested in the history books. It would be unprecedented to come back after being thrown out (after the shortest premiership in British history). Says it all really. It was bad enough putting him there in the first place, to do it again would be insanity. Barmy and stupid how our country is being run right now.
Reading the papers etc. I do not think Boris will make it. That was the point of yesterdays RichT and Boris meeting....Boris was blustering through again; "threatening " Sunak with going to the membership ( which Boris would obviously win).... He hasn't got the 100 votes Sunak will PM this afternoon
I’d agree - if Boris cannot muster 100 votes, then he won’t officially/formally enter the race, and Mordant should drop out so that the MPs can coalesce behind Rishi. However, if he can gather 100 supporters, then Boris will romp home via the membership - particularly given what the Mail on Sunday is reporting re the respective Poll results under Johnson, Sunak and Mordant.
I hope you're right, Beth, and I think perhaps you are. Tory MP's are alive to the fact that we need a PM that is disciplined and prepared to involve him/herself in the detail. Boris Johnson would not do that. So I really hope he doesn't get 100 votes, and the Tory membership don't get their mitts on it.
Oddly, there's less of a justification for demanding a GE if Johnson comes back because he can point to the fact that he was at least elected by the public in the first place.
Next month the Commons Privileges Committee starts its investigation into whether Johnson lied to the house over Partygate. We could end up with a PM suspended from the House, apparently No10 staff are lining up to testify that he did. Then presumably they dump him again and we’ll have another PM before Christmas. I want Johnson to run and win. Cash from chaos! But I suspect Sunak will get more than half of MPs votes, possibly be crowned on Monday if Johnson fears he won’t get 100 to back him.
I'd kind of like Johnson to get it too. I want to see him properly humiliated. What sickens me though is all these Tories banging on about what's best for their party. Sunak would be better for the country, get him in.
Well, they assume that the Tories are best for the country full stop, I imagine, the party and the country are the same thing to them, so what’s good for the party is good for the country. After all the alternatives are those filthy heathens called liberals or, god forbid, lock up your daughters, socialists.
