Cabaye - Unsung hero against Stoke

  1. It's amazing how in quite a few games this season, we all think Cabaye had a quiet game, and it seems that way after the first time you've seen the game.

But if you watch the game again, you see Cabaye's contribution to the game. He put in quite a few nippy tackles, and they were mostly extremely precise and got us out of danger. His defensive work on monday was key to the game.

It seems that Cabaye has certain games where he isn't on the ball a lot but he still produces moments that can change the game. Last ditch tackles, sublime through balls and quality passes.

    Anyone else agree?

I agree actually. Everyone thought that against Arsenal he was quiet and was adapting to the pace of the Premier League but he made more tackles than any other player that weekend. Especially with Tiote away his attacking contribution was limited but he still did an important job for us defensively.

Cabaye's work rate in midfield was phenomenal.

His passing was poorer than normal, because of the style we adopted (but even then, a couple of his chipped through balls could have resulted in goals had Begovic not been so alert).

But some of his closing down and harrying was class. If it had been Scott Parker doing it, it would have been hailed genius.

I agree. I thought he had a decent game whilst I was at the game. He worked as hard as everyone else defensively, played some great passes, and was crucial to our counter-attack - he was the player who stayed furthest up at corners.

Gave the ball away too much, was much the same against Blackburn, doesn't look assured when he doesn't have The Beast alongside him. Guthrie definitely had a better game than him against Stoke. Still class like but he's not going to be man of the match every game is he?

Aye there was another game i thought he was poor in (can't remember which just now) and after seeing the highlights, he was involved in everything, he just wasn't playing the final pass so I didn't notice him as much!

Everyone in the team did that against Stoke.

Cabaye did more then Guthrie against Stoke as well, part from passes, but even then Cabayes a couple of Cabayes passes could of been turned into goals if the keeper wasn't alert.

Guthrie probably put in more tackles, gave the ball away much much less and covered just as much ground.

If the keeper wasn't alert? Love it. Most keepers are alert, he overhit the passes.

Cabaye was better at tackling against Stoke and put more tackles in. Dunno about how much ground was covered by either mind.

Over hit the pass when the stopped keeper Ba getting the ball 5 yards out his box, and had to slide to get to the ball? Yeah ok...cl;early hugely overhit the pass..

I'dd like to see stats for tackles, from what I saw Guthrie made more than Cabaye.

When did I say he hugely overhit the passes? He slightly overhit most through balls, we don't have quick strikers. In that case yeah he slightly overhit it, fact that it went to the keeper shows that.

Thought he was pretty average in terms of quality, he's better than he showed and is usually far more careful with his passes. But he still worked his socks off and made some good tackles. Certainly wasn't awful, just not at his best.

He put in a decent workman like shift. Yes it wasn't an all action attacking display like his second half performance v Villa but effective nonetheless.

If the keeper didn't run so far out of his goal, I would say overhit (like Guthries down the wing that was nowhere near Obertan).

Cabaye made 5 out of 6 tackles and 0 interceptions, Guthrie made 3 out of 5 tackles and 2 interceptions.

Guthrie completed 19 out of 26 passes whereas Cabaye completed 13 out of 30.
