Great to get a desperately needed win, our passing was good, Longman held and payed the ball off well when he received it. Think we played them at the right time and made the most of it. It’s that consistency we need now though as there will be much tougher games ahead. It must have given everyone a big lift after many recent poor defeats. Let’s hope it’s the start of some better results, a point on Saturday to follow this would be a great result and give us all some belief again.
A much needed win for confidence, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. We scored 3 goals, 1st one was a scrappy one, 3rd one was a deflection, and 2nd one was an amazing shot that will happen once or twice in a season. There is still work to do with this team, but hopefully confidence from this game can help in next game.
If the same starting eleven are selected I can see us doing really well at Rotherham. It was just such a massive, and that’s no understatement, improvement all round, pressing, tackling, passing and three goals, our midfield didn’t give theirs a look in for the vast majority of the game. To me it just looked like Daws had found the magic formula. Players that had previously looked meh, and there are a few that have looked like that, suddenly looked full of confidence and we’re looking to attack, go forward with their passing at every opportunity. Players that could previously have been accused of hiding were constantly finding space, into which one touch passes were going from their teammates. It obviously feels good to see a win after such an awful run, however I was more pleased with the actual performance and the confidence that it must have given to the full club and its support. It all clicked! UTGT.
Or from another perspective; 1st one was a great assist from Ryan Woods which led to chaos on the goal line and Sniffer Longman got a clinical touch. 2nd one came about because of the space the team created in the build up which allowed for Docherty to find room for an unchallenged strike from 20 yards out. 3rd one deflected off a defender making a desperate lunge rather than a tackle or considered block when he was out of position following a defence splitting run from our wing back (who is really an out of form centre back apparently). Bit like life, it all depends how you look at it.
Unreal eh, our midfield, and the obvious practicing of corner routines, created the platform that we scored three goals from, yet some still like to detract from the efforts.
It is all confusing. Does a deflected shot and a scrambled goal count for more than an xG? Is a block buster worth 2xGs?
Completely agree with your overall point here, but I think it'd be a little bit generous to consider the first goal a well-worked set piece. The delivery almost went out for a goal kick short of the near post, Woods kept it alive brilliantly, and then we got an overdue bit of luck with the bounce of the defender.
