Where is it you're at? Poole/Sandbanks area or is that someone else on here? I used to go to some stuff in Bournemouth when I lived down that way, only big-ish venue was the BIC if I remember.... Plenty of nights out raving in The Opera House though, used to get all the big DJs in there. I'm really lucky up here, there's so many venues - could easily go to a gig a night. Glasgow is 25 miles from me, about 35 minute drive of an evening or 45 on the train if I want a drink (I normally drive - doesn't stop me jumping right in and having a good time!) We've got venues of all sizes, from Hug & Pint which holds 100 if it's lucky to the Hydro which fits about 8000, plus Hampden, Bellahouston Park and Glasgow Green for the summer gigs. We did lose the O2 ABC when the fire burnt down the Art School a few years back, which was a real bummer as it was a great venue - one of many that Jnr and his bands have played.
Have you seen the advert for RNIB that's on tv at the moment? Using Videotape by Radiohead as the music behind the appeal - such a beautiful song...
You have some excellent venues within a good distance Steels and a good mix of genres through them too which is always great. Yeh I’m based in Poole - so there are some artists at the Lighthouse theatre Poole, the BIC does have some good artist choices as well and the Academy in Bournemouth is a good tight venue (looking forward to seeing Public Service Broadcasting tonight). For stadium venues we do have Southampton football ground which isn’t too large as stadium venues go (and sometimes Southampton Cricket ground - though never been there). Also the Guildhall in Portsmouth (a bit rundown) does provide some options. After that it’s much more travelling and planning, which can make mid-week options impossible despite working for ourselves (depends how big the draw and desire is to get there - and back very very late).
Jealous - we saw PSB just after latest album came out, it was phenomenal, everything I hoped it would be. Plenty of old footage on the screens to tie in with the tracks. I was unsure as to how it would work, mixing songs from their back catalogue but they did it very well. Whoever the video co-ordinator is, they deserve a medal because it's impeccably timed. Look out for Go, a real crowd pleaser with plenty of audience participation.....
Just announced.....One of my favourite bands ever, performing one of my favourite albums ever, at one of my favourite venues...OMFG!!!! King Tuts only holds 300 so fingers crossed for tickets (although I should have some pre-sale)....saw Draper there earlier this year....but the whole of Six - wow!!!
Steels - If you have an o2 phone you can get your Paul Draper tickets on priority (ie before general release on Wednesday) I just got two for Islington Academy only £29 each.
Steels … Wow! Excellent gig! It was not what I expected, I imagined keyboards, loops and video. What I got was musicianship, performance and a show. Mr B provided the backdrop through graphics and set (it was great that they could provide a set that really contributed to the bands ethos and music). The horns section were brilliant when on. While the three band members J, W & JFA put on a great performance - there wasn’t a thing to critique. Go! was indeed a strong audience participation track; who knew you’d be ‘dancing’ to PSB (Blue Heaven; People, Let’s dance; Gagarin…). Brilliant night. PS - JFA helped out the support band when their bass players guitar strap broke and he couldn’t fix it, having to play cross legged on the stage floor (JFA ran round the back grabbed one of his bass guitars and handed it over to him to finish his set). Cheers Steels, I went because I followed your review of their tour 10/10.
So glad you enjoyed it. Been listening to them for a long time (since first album) and finally got the chance to see them last year. They're playing Edinburgh but not Glasgow this tour, that's a bit too far for a midweek gig, so gutted we're not going but sounds like you had a ball. I told @Hoop-Leif to go see them but sounds like he's missed out on a classic
