Do not shoot the messenger time... This one is for Saturday in the British Champions Fillies And Mares (Ascot 2:40): Eshaada (each way) She won the race last year and trades at around 7/1 (before declaration time – may shorten if significant non runners). She has not won since and was behind Mimikyu in the Park Hill last time out and behind Sea La Rosa in the Lancashire Oaks. Warning that my mate got this from the same source as the last Varian one that was an unraced three year old. It was hammered the night before the race then drifted back out in the betting on the track and got well beaten.
14 of the 17 entries remain in the final field. All of the original principals have stayed in - the trio of withdrawals were the 3 lowest rated 3YOs.
Carlisle 13,35 Deluxe Range 7/1 e/w WH and bet365 three places, sky 13/2 four places 15,20 Azof Des Mottes 9/2 Lads and Coral, others 4/1 Yard on fire (4-6 last 14 days)
Surprised at the lack of Barney commenting about Tommy's Oscar winning from a mark of 155 on chase debut, the highest mark a horse has won a handicap off on Chase debut (in a handicap) in more than a decade (I can't find anything all the way back to 1998). Ok, it was a two runner race, but to give 17lbs to a race fit 4 times chase winner on chase debut was very taking. Even more taking for me was the way he won despite being impeded on a few occasions by his rival, and picking up when it looked like he was going to be beaten. Clearly a horse with lots of ability and with an attitude that looks very hardened, he surely is the best horse in the North of the UK, and potentially he will give Jonbon and others a scare if he goes for races in the south over the 2 miles trip. Taking with a capital T
Thanks for posting Nass - I spent the entire afternoon on the train and didn’t see any race cards, let alone results. A very polished debut and, as you said, showed real battling qualities.
Top quality debut from Tommy's Oscar wasn't it. Would agree he's the best in the North. Arkle contender??? I can't see why not but I note that the owner has already ruled Tommy's Oscar out of that meeting - Aintree the more likely. You can get 40's re him and the Arkle. I could go on for hours (don't worry I won't) about Jonbon. Can't say I'm completely taken by him after reflecting on last term and I certainly wouldn't be rushing to take 4's re him and the 'Meghan Markle'. Probs won't know for sure until Cheltenham anyway because I'm sure we both know how Jonbon (all being well) will be campaigned between now and March. 2-3 runs in very, very uncompetative novice chases which he wins either on the bridle or very close to it. Re Geronimo (the horse Tommy's Oscar beat) did you see how many horses he beat to achieve that 4 timer. In order (from 1st victory to 4th) 2-1-1-2. If that doesn't highlight the lack of runners in novice chases I don't know what does. That's 5 consecutive novice chases now that the old boy has run in and in all of them he's never faced more than 2 opponents.
