Darius Vassell is out with a long term injury which is a good thing in a way as we no longer have to play him. He has been crap the whole time he has been here but he was Sven's favourite. Hopefully the new manager will get rid of him and sign a striker to compete with Nugent and Beckford. Jordan Rhodes would do nicely http://www.thisisleicestershire.co....-lengthy-lay/story-13743896-detail/story.html
I could never be pleased that a Leicester player is injured (well not never, but not often) but yeh, this isn't really a great loss. Hopefully Schlupp will get a few chances. All the best to Darius, let's hope it's not TOO serious.
Feel sorry for Vassell. He aint getting younger, and one of his main attributes has been his pace - which a knee injury could affect. Personally, I think he has done OK for us and takes a lot of unjustified stick. He's pretty much been played out wide which aint his position. Noticeable that 2 of our worst performances (Bristol and Reading) when we didnt look like scoring - he wasnt available cos of suspension. He seems to be singled out as the player to jump on by a lot of supporters since Gally turned his game around last season. Certainly not worthy of comments like he should never play for us again. Have seen too many players in the past where that label can be used, and Vassell comes nowhere near that category. Seen loads of comments that King doesnt work hard enough - absolute bollocks. Cant believe some of the absolute drivel that comes out of our own fans mouths. Glad to have Gally back and fit - and yes - I would play Gally in place of Vassell cos he offers something different. I appreciate we all are entitled to our own views, and that more will agree that Vassell hasnt done enough than with me, that his ball retention and pace cause problems for full backs, and that his chasing back is generally first class. Rant over
None of those 3 retain the ball like Vassell. None of them have the same pedigree. Whilst Dyer and Schlupp have pace, Waggy doesnt come close. Dyer doesnt cover back enough and has a poor cross. If we are talking about a strikers role, then I agree, Schlupp before Vassell - but I hope to God we dont play Schlupp out of position again. Personally, I think it is Gally or Vassell - depending on the opposition, and the requirements for the team.
Waggy was officially the quickest player at the club in 2010 So he's quicker than Dyer, don't know about Schlupp. I agree to some extent tbf. It does depend where he is played, in a front 2 or a central strikers role in a front 3, Vassell can be very good. He goes missing far too often for me though and isn't a goalscorer. Out of the strikers we've got you could easily put him 5th choice, but currently everyone's better than Beckford. Playing him out wide has always been pointless though.
If Nigel did come back and got Waggy playing to the same level as before he would be a million miles better then Vassell
Not sure where you got that info from Emilio - Waggy could certainly bench press more than anyone else at the club, but hes certainly not as quick as Dyer. Vassell is not an out and out striker - he has proved this. His best position is in the hole behind a striker - showed this at Villa in his youth. This is why I say depends on who the opposition is and the requirements of the team. Oh - and by the way - you dont score many goals if you lose possession
One of the players was being interviewed by Stringer and he said Waghorn is the quickest player at the club over a long distance. I think he would face better competition now with Beckford and Nugent
I'm pretty sure it was one the coaches who said so, they had done a test in training. And I don't think anyone's saying ball retention is a bad thing, but there are too many players happy to pass responsibility and don't try to make things happen. Vassell has pace and some trickery, he should use it more often. Id' rather us take some chances and make something happen with the ball more often than just pass sideways and backwards until the crowd get impatient and then just hoof it aimlessly.
It's never good when a Leicester player gets injured. Especially with a long term one like it seems Darius has got and get well soon to him. But I think it's fair to say that there are player's who are more important to us and we'd be more affected if they were to get an injury like this. The thing with Vassell seems to be his consistency. One game he can be very good, another he can be non-existent. He does give us a pace option but I feel he needs to do more with it. When he's good, he is very effective but when he isn't, you don't notice he's playing which happens to often for a player of his pedigree and talent. But no, it's not a good thing he's injured.
Hopefully we can get a proper winger in as a replacement. When Vassell recovers, we can then play him in his proper position, perhaps as an impact sub until he regains full fitness.
