I understand where your coming from.

The idea that trent is poor defensively is a myth. Something propagated by the press and motd.

If he stood in the right back position and headed **** away then Southgate would love him.

Klopp sees his attacking output and has made the risk/reward calculation that's its better to have him pushed forward than stood next to matip.

Southgate has done the same and decided he'd rather have 8 centrebacks, just incase the opposition mount an attack.

Yes, trent pisses me off while I watch the match, but afterwards I tend to come to my senses.

He's rarely beaten 1 on 1, good in the air and has a tackle in him. If klopp tells him to press their left back, you can't whoop when he wins the ball and we go on to score, then moan when the ball is played down the channel and wonder where he is.

We've had one of the best defensive records over the past few years, won multiple trophies. You don't do that with a **** right back.

    I wouldn't go that far.

The facts as i see them are:

    a) klopp tells this lad to run forward and beyond forward into non full back poistions. Its phycially impossible to be in 2 laces at once. And yes sometimes "chasing back" can look like he's nowhere near but if he's asked to run to centre forward how on eartch can he even get near?

    b) sometimes he is a lazy sod

    c) sometimes he is positionally terrible (as in too far infield compared to his position in the back 4 thus opening the rb channel to attacks)

    d) others are letting him down quite badly when he does what he is asked to do as they are leaving that gap they are meant to close. I showed images from the brighton game where henderson was LW (not RCM) and trent running into CF. There's acres of pitch matip then is exposed in.

    e) when klopp says he doesn't have a defensive issue the team does he is right IMO that people are leaving gaps and exposing trent to critique however he is also covering trent as he makes fundamental defensive errors.

    f) trent is not very aware of players coming behind him at the back stick. Look at the real madrid goal in the final last season. hes oblivious to the man who scores, he is oblivious to fulhams big lump at the back stick

the point i nobody is "perfect" Trent has things he should be doing better but the team as a whole are leaving the gaps that we are getting exposed with. IMO if trent i told to go run then midifeld is not disciplined enough to close the gaps

This is a good break down.

It's not just about trent being better going forward than being defensive.

The team has been set up to take advantage of his attributes.

If he runs out to pressure, the ball is played behind him, how exactly is he supposed to teleport back into the rb position.

In previous seasons Henderson would be there, or matip would be over with fabinho covering cb.

This season elliot at rm hasn't covered. Fabinho hasn't dropped in so matip can't get across.

The system has failed. Which is why its been changed.

As an additional, I dont think lazy is the right term, I dont think he's got the best awareness of danger at times, he's not switched on enough.

You can see him trotting back, then suddenly realise "oh ****" and start to sprint, but by that time it's already to late.

    100%!

Trent is scape goat which means every little thing he does wrong is magnified by rival fans and the media. Walker and James literally make the same if not more mistakes but neither get the attention that Trent does.

As you say, we can ask Trent to sit deep and not attack and he would defend perfectly well. And again as you say, Trent has been part of a defensive unit which has ben superb over the past 4-5 years.

it took tuchel less than 6 weeks to transform Chelsea's also ran frank lampard team into a CL winning team by drilling 343 into them hand having players cover each other. we are not covering each other any more. Elioot hasn't a clue and runs off anywhere and henderson is as bad.

I could see v rangers there were far smaller gaps but they were so **** its impossible to say if arsneal won't just tear us apart again.

Henderson doesnt have the legs he once did but he wasn't helped by the awful set up down that right side. Playing a more reserved role at RCM should hopefully see the best out of him, along with Trent and Mo. Harvey has a lot to learn.

We really need a new RCM to come in ASAP.

ffs the point is that he is always called up but Southgate doesn't play him as he doesn't rate him - at least in the way he wants England to play .
Ward Prowse rarely gets selected to play far more llkely to be Trippier taking FK's.
    Another great cross to Mane

    Callum Wilson:

"There's a Golden Boot at the end of the season. That's out of the picture. That's gone. Haaland needs his own boot, and then we need another boot. We need a silver boot nowadays. We need a little something, to make it fair."

Good to see Brighton back to their usual ability in front of goal and not being able to score after their 3 goals against us

When you look at the space we left for them to play in, a child could score.

Tomorrow's game will be decided imo on how many arsenal players are running at Joel matip unopposed. We need to be much more compact in terms of players covering spaces.

If both henderson and trent go at once and vvd doesn't bother coming over then I'm afraid matip cannot mark 2 or 3 players

    Lfc were doing this v Brighton at 0-0 0-1, 0-2 and 3-2.

Close the gaps. Do their own job first.

For me 0-0 would do me just fine v arsenal. Park 10 men and try hit on break for all I care.

We need to return to basics and build up, so chasing ges from a goal or two goals down is not sustainable.

Time to do what so many have done to us at Anfield, but it needs discipline and concentration and both have been in short supply this season

When Arsenal drop off (and they will) I hope everyone is really going to enjoy City walking to the title unopposed, destroying any notion that the EPL is the 'most competitive'

Who cares what a loser like callum wilson thinks?

When's he ever competed for the golden boot.... ever..

Another who's been primed by whichever interviewer to big up haaland rather than comment properly on his own game.

If I were a striker who's side won 5-1 I wouldn't want to talk about man city I can tell you that.

Depends how easy they take it to ensure they win the quadruple.

They'll have the league sewn up fairly early but can spend the points on resting players for the big one.
