Oh absolutely, I don't mean to suggest they should have stuck with a formula and never evolved their sound. I just don't think they've done it successfully, their influences have always been obvious (for example just listen to the start of Benighted and then the start of Never Let Go by Camel) and so going down the path of a full album emulation of their influences didn't seem wise on paper - and for me at least it hasn't worked.
I wouldn't say they're well ahead in terms of progression in sound either though - you should see what Ulver did from one album to the next! Metal - folk - bizarre spoken word rock - trip hop - crazy experimental rock - ambient - indie rock! All the while keeping an identifiable sound; I'm not really that big an Ulver fan either but respect to them for that!

  2. Well you've judged us all on a minority then mate. Regardless of how many people you've met that are into death metal, it's still a small percentage. I'm not trying to go around saying "death metal is awesome and takes more skill than any other genre, anyone who dislikes it doesn't know what music is".

All I'm saying is i hate people that make stupid statements about death metal saying the people who make it are talentless.

  3. If you read my comment, i never said anything of the sort. I don't care if you don't like it, you're entitled to hate it if you want, and i understand why most people can't stand the sound, but calling death metal band members "talentless" is just ridiculous.

I agree there are quite a few death metal bands out there that just like to be as obscene as possible and call it "brutal", and think they're so great for being the direct opposite of a conformist.

But there are a lot of death metal bands out there with exceptional talent, and they put a lot of effort and feeling into their music.

Cannibal Corpse, yes they're quite disgusting, but despite the disgusting lyrics in most of their songs, their music, instrumental wise, is very good in my opinion. Their lyrics aren't meant to be taken seriously, and they get their inspiration from B-movie style horror flicks. Cannibal Corpse don't think they're super hardcore for being totally "anti-establishment".

    I never suggested this.

I said you think this ^. And clearly you do, seeing as you literally just posted that yourself right now!

  5. I'm not denying i think this. Anyone who suggests that death metal bands are filled with members with no talent are ****ing stupid. Some are, but some aren't.

It's the same in every genre. A lot of rappers these days suck cock compared to the old school rappers who wrote lyrics from the heart. These days i can't stand most rappers because they've sucked the life out of the genre. People like Nicki Minaj... classed as good rappers nowadays... ffs.

I never said you did, it was more of an implication that came through in what you said. It was like a "My music is better than yours" thing.

I don't deny some Death Metal bands have talent, I'm still partial to listen to a few myself, despite the fact I'll always choose other Genres. I'm just putting my opinion out there dude <ok>

One band I do enjoy listening to, because I've seen them live and they're a brilliant live band:

Not a fan, something about them that doesn't appeal to me.

Some Nirvana (Even though I find them disgustingly overrated)

Just got the leak of Four Year Strong's new album In Some Way, Shape or Form. It's immense! Genuinely brilliant.

Anybody into Stars of the Lid (drone ambient band)? Have a couple of their mid-90s albums and one from the early 00's and they're all top stuff.
