Populism and politics by slogan, rather than by discussion, has contributed to all of that. But, I blame Twitter, Facebook and, to an extent, sites like this. People can shout their viewpoints into the electronic world and get validation from likes but don't have to engage in meaningful debate. Any dissent to those views is viciously attacked. It doesn't matter if these viewpoints are based on inaccuracies, half-truths, or even outright lies, they will be believed, adopted, and repeated by people who are on the same 'side'.

Well the council have just filled in the pot holes up to our house and I can honestly say a five year old could do no worse. I would think 1 or 2 frosts and it will be exactly the same as it started, no cut edges, no filling edges with hot tar just laying over the top of the hole and leveled, this is a Liberal council here.

I agree with you but to an extent that’s always been the case, people on soap boxes spouting rubbish, it’s just there are more soap boxes around now in the form of social media. The saying “empty drums make the most noise” is as true now as it ever was.

The problem is that we all have an opinion and think we are experts. When in reality none of us are aware of the overriding factors that necessitate every executive decision taken. I don’t know the answers, but I do expect politicians to know them and to explain why the decision was necessary.

In my humble opinion, the time to judge a government is when they have had sufficient time in power to allow an honest assessment and I think I can make that assessment of this Conservative government after twelve years in office.

You must live next to me Rooch, exactly the same has happened here. Our local council is an embarrassment and is subject to a criminal investigation for the second time, this time it is the Conservatives in power last time it was Labour.

How adults can act the way they (both sides) do is beyond me.

It is a a cut because inflationary protection has been removed from the budget allocation. If they get 4% rise in their budget and inflation is 10% it is a 6% cut in services.

No, we don't know what influences every executive decision but people tend to fill in the gaps. Social media gives people a far greater audience for their speculation or wild conspiracy theories and that is frightening. The speed with which this misinformation becomes adopted is amazing and no one seems to fact check it.

Real terms cut yes. It'll be played like the NHS figures are, 'never been more money available' etc.

If it was me running it, every policy decision would be accompanied by the reasoning, what other options were considered, and who was involved in the process. Transparency and accountability would stop most of the social media hysterics dead. Governments could avoid a huge amount of unnecessary flak by giving people as much information as they can about how they come to decisions.

I completely agree. It's not unusual for that kind of thing to be applied in business and in other areas.

Spot on, but “real terms” rises are essential in a healthy economy.
