New Black Keys song! Can't wait for the new album. One of my favourite bands getting back to what they do best by the sounds of it <diva>

I find it interesting that fans of Death Metal always have a yearn to prove to other people why their music isn't ****.

  8. No we don't, i just find it annoying how some people think it takes no talent, and it's all just loud strumming on a guitar with random screaming.

Actually for the most part, in my experience, Death Metal fans do. Was into it myself for a while as a teen and by and large everybody DM inclined that I knew had some sort of never-noticed need to put people who assumed it took no talent in their place. Like a chip on their shoulder from hearing so often that its crap. The go-to band to disprove them back then was Opeth, but they've been crap and far from death metal for years now.

So no one can have an opinion on a genre now?

Whilst I used to like Death Metal, there's not much variation from band to band. To someone who doesn't listen to it, they all sound the same, obviously with a slight difference, but they wouldn't really assume they were completely different bands. I'm not against it as a genre, I just think that it's not as diverse as something like Indie, where 2 bands of the same genre can sound completely different to anyone who listens to them.

I think one difference here, trying to be as inoffensive as possible, is that metal fans are usually terminology geeks in the sense that they create subgenres as often as they change their underwear. If you were to refer to a 'melodeath metal' band as 'death metal' you'll get your head bitten off.
Another difference is that as much as they won't want to admit it, metal is a dead end genre. This doesn't mean that there can't be great metal music, just that it grows increasingly hard to create something original in metal without incorporating hugely obvious influence from other styles of music. Other forms of music have more open space to experiment and shoot off into different realms without alienating their audience as much.

Interesting, I really can't stand Opeths new album despite being a big fan of the 70s prog influences it wears on its sleeve. I don't think they've put out a really great release since Blackwater Park, though Damnation had some nice moments. To me it just meanders and wanders aimlessly, trying to show off its influences as much as possible and forgetting uniqueness and quality.

yeah but with the back catalogue they have in their locker as a prog rock band they cant do the same style music for every album, early days was definitely more consistent but they are well ahead of many bands in terms of trying to progress their sound to new levels. Not always successfully as you pointed out, last album i bought before Heritage was Ghost Reveries, a horrible mistake in their catalogue that should never have happened. I think Heritage is definitely a good listen, but certainly not their finest achievement

Edit :- Its still very hard to compare albums as alot are far too different from the one before. Guess they just try to cover alot of bases musically.
