As JD Wetherspoon is listed on the London Stock Exchange, the “owner” is actually the shareholders. He does not retain a majority holding and more than a third of the company’s employees have free shares from a bonus scheme. You are a ****er.
You cannot fill the place on your own. You being an alcoholic and a sexual predator does not make everyone else the same. Freely available evidence would suggest Wetherspoon is a reputable business. It paid £5.6bn in taxes between 2012 and 2021 (£764.4m in 2019) and has issued 20.6m shares to employees on the company bonus scheme since 2003 (in 2019 it paid £46m in bonuses and shares to employees: 58 per cent of the company’s profits). Since 2006, Wetherspoon have paid £454m in bonuses and shares to employees (49.3 per cent of profits). What a terrible way for a large publicly listed company to treat its 40,670 staff. They are so bad that they keep getting nominated as a top employer by the Top Employers Institute. Anybody scoffing at this business clearly knows nothing about it at all.
During and after the Brexit debate and vote, Tim Martin was a Brexit advocate and he regularly used his column in the Wetherspoon News magazine to give his opinions. He also used the same in-house magazine to replicate articles from the mainstream media both for and against Brexit so that patrons reading the magazine could form their own opinions. That would seem to be the action of a reasonable person who welcomed open discussion of both points of view, certainly a bit more balanced that various mainstream media outlets.
