Obertan Injured

  1. Marveaux isn't really an out and out winger.

He looks good running down the center and feeding things into the box. He has great ball control, he is really nippy, but he doesn't really have the sort of pace that beats fullbacks over a long distance. He accelerates fast, which is how get gets past players, but the rate he covers ground over a long distance isn't THAT great. He's got good sprint speed but not in the same league as Jonas or Ober.

We'll just have to adapt our style of play...Long cross fields on the break won't work any more so we'll have to be more patient in the build up.

Although we'll miss Obertan's pace, Marv's touch and crossing abillity will add another dimension so I'm not too worried!

Everyone seems to think Marv's the man. I,however, would go with Ben Arfa for Everton. He has good memories of slaying them last season and will be up for it!!

He's just coming back. If we intend to play him as an AM from now on we can't go swapping positions around already.

He's a talented enough footballer to play in more than 1 position. I would play Benny!!!

It's a pity Obertan's injured, he seems to be improving every game. But many of us have wanted to see Marveaux given a few games so maybe this is his opportunity. At least Pardew has several different options.

Bad luck for Obertan, just as he had his best game for us he gets injured.

I would like to see either Marveaux replace him or even Santon who could play right wing and have a Jonas-esque role.

Has to be Marv. Feel bad for Obertan though, he performed the best he ever has for us against Stoke and might end up losing his place now.

Crikey ... I've not been checking in too often recently due to work requirements, but how refreshing to see a thread where no one's being slated (ie. Obertan) and it's all positive on the replacement front for an injured player .. is this some funky, alternate reality where we reside 3rd in the table and everythings looking positive? .. even big Mike seems to be off the radar at the mo .. gentlemen I salute you all .. <ok>

Interesting quote from Pardew on the matter:

In a way, I hope Tiote isn't back for the Everton game because that would mean Guthrie will probably play on the right which would be suicidal

Sadly I can see this happening too. He's already shown that he will make minimal changes to a winning side unless he is forced into it, so can see him shifting Guthrie out wide. All that'll happen there is we'll have no right winger because Guthrie will constantly cut inside, and Simmo will be massively exposed, so if the likes of Drenthe play then it could get messy!

Have to be honest, I don't see this happening at all. Why would Pardew reward Guthrie with a start in a different position to where he played well? We could maybe have expected Hughton to try this but I just can't see it happening especially when we have played Marveaux in Obertans position a few times already and he has for the most part played very well.

We'll see what happens anyway, it just seems Pards is slightly reluctant to start Marv or give him significant game time. I know players need to get up to fitness, but how long does it take? We're 10 games into the season!

Sad news for Gabes he looked like he was finally finding some form after a run of games.

Now, excuse me if I'm wrong but didn't Dan Gosling play RM on numerous occasions FOR Everton. Now using him in this fixture I think would be very beneficial, especially as he offers up much better defensive cover than Ben Arfa or Marveaux (even though I've not seen much of the latter throughout his career, he does look a bit lightweight).

I'd put decent money on it that Gosling will start in place of Obertan.

I think we have to reward the player who has earned the right to start through their performances (albeit brief) this season, not because of something they did over a year ago. For me, that has to be Marv. He has looked creative and sharp when he has played, whereas HBA has looked a little rusty and lacking confidence (mainly with the physical side of the game which is understandable).

That is actually a good plan tbh. Will be determined to impress against Everton. Wouldn't expect Baines to give him much like

I feel sorry for Obertan, I was just starting to warm to him as a player after his effort against Stoke. I'd use Gosling or Marv on the right, Marv would cut in a lot and do his thing as well as having Simmo on the overlap, like Obertan but the opposite foot. I see Gosling ending up like a Barton RW if we play him, crossing it in to the big men up front.

I'm going to disagree and say he is a winger, but his game is different to Jonas and Obertan. Whilst Jonas and Obertan have the pace to beat their man easily, Marveaux is more a skill player and doesn't need pace to actually get round someone, don't get me wrong, he's a nippy player, but it's not what he's about. From what we've seen already he likes to cut in, like Jonas, but his crossing is really accurate (Aston Villa for example) and frankly, I don't see a problem playing him on the wing.
